How good are Advent Computers
Could forum members give me their thoughts on Advent computers as my partner is considering buying a new desktop computer and has about £900 to spend and just needs some advice on what she could get for her money for that amount and any advice would be welcome..

Last time I had any dealings with an advent PC it was a pile of crap. As for the laptop I owned that was an even bigger pile. TBH her 900 would be well spent at your local PC builders.

Re: How good are Advent Computers
I have an Advent XP machine. I'd advise what others have advised... go for something else, custom build for that sort of money.
My Advent was brought years and years ago, it wasnt bad back then but now days theres much better paths to go up.
Out of curiousity what are the specs of the Advent youve come across and how much?

At the present moment the strong favourite is to spec our own as we have been looking at sites like Dino and PC Specialist.

Re: How good are Advent Computers
If you're upto it then build your own.. Means you get exactly what you want and you learn at the same time.. As long as you're careful in what you plug in where and how you mount the CPU/HS/Fan then you can't go wrong.
I concur though with the advent comments, cheap dixons crap, always have been and always will be.

Thanks for your advice Kymmy and with the help of our family we are going to build our own.

Re: How good are Advent Computers
Ebuyer and other online sites are best for components, shop around.. look for motherboard/ram/cpu bundles.. even ebay is a good source of new components at a cheap price.. Just don't skimp on the PSU and if you're a games player also don't skip on the GFX card.

No we certainly won't be skimping on parts as past experience has taught us that rather harshly l am afraid.

Re: How good are Advent Computers
Build your own can be enlightening. If you buy a motherboard / CPU / Cooler / Ram bundle from the likes of scan it will have been preassembled and tested which removes a lot of the doubt's you might have. All you have to do is drop (well be a bit more careful than that) the bundle into the case. By using a bundle you know all the components will be happy with each other. It still leaves you plenty of choice with your case, PSU, drive(s) (HDD/ SSD/ Optical), and GPU. Don't forget to budget for you OS too.
Prebuilt PCs can be OK, but often aren't very inspiring in terms of components and thus efficiency. There is a risk some components are customised so aren't easily replaced for upgrades. For basic workhorses, such as offices they are great, but if you might want to tweak things in the future it might be limiting. You should be able to google for some comparative reviews on specific pre-built computers. The biggest issue perhaps is they are pre-built and so the pricing may have been set a few months before they reached the shop shelves, which means you can get better value by self building from current component prices. Of course you should also reflect the costs of your labour.

Only build it yourself if you're prepared to face the possibility of nothing happening when you turn it on
