Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Money obviously talked but as we know the grass is usually not greener on the other side as the viewing figures have shown as terrestrial channels will always have a far bigger audience then pay TV sports channels.

Short sighted decision by UEFA . It will be interesting to see what happens next time around. Hopefully a deal including a terestial partner can be done similar to that of Sky and ITV in the previous deal.

Agreed the original deal would suit me personally , ITV and Sky provided pretty decent coverage.

If I'm honest I rarely watch BT Sport.

Me either, I watch the occasional EPL game ,but that's about it. The sports I watch the most are on Sky or Eurosport.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

I think BT went all in for CL rights at a high price to blow SKY out of the water as SKY have done so often before, thats is after all how they initially got the top tier of UK domestic football off territorial TV in the first place. If they had partnered with ITV or BBC then they may have lost out if made to compromise bid wise and then get dragged into a second round which SKY are masters at winning.

Best solution if UEFA truly want games on terrestrial that reach a wide audience is to split the rights into two packages with one being for terrestrial only. Much better than all the issues from joint bids. Problem solved.

Just seen that as a result of the new deal BT will to show one extra match in the first 5 rounds plus I'm assuming an extra replay. So from 24 games per season to 30.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

I thought that BT had to show a certain amount of games free to air, ie. on their Freeview channel. Have they not been doing this? Or have they been cherry picking some potentially poor games just to say they made it available to all.

Yes they have been showing games on their 'freeview' channel but have given this no publicity what-so-ever so hardly anyone knew about the games.

Not poor games but mostly non English club matches and 2nd pick of the night when they do. Main issue is that they only reveal the match they are showing a most a week before, not all areas of the country pick up showcase and it's poor picture quality and not HD.

It will be interesting to see what ratings the final gets compared to other years.

I reckon BT will end up doing something about this for next season rather than risk ****ing off UEFA and not getting anything in next rights auction. They have tried selling selected rights to ITV already and I would not be surprised if they try again with perhaps an improved offer or maybe CH5 now that the ownership is different.

BT Infinity 1 will be increasing the 'up to' speed from 38mbps to 52mbps

Quote:
BT Broadband will be making some portfolio changes as from tomorrow (15/4):

To summarise the key points;

1. They are going to be emphasising “smarter broadband” which will be supported in both below the line and above the line comms. This is made up of
a. Faster connections – BT will have the fastest standard fibre speeds in the country at 52mb
b. Better connected through their extensive 5million Wi-Fi hotspots
c. Safer as standard – with BT Protect or BT Protect plus, parental controls and cloud storage to keep your photos and files safe (note some of the increases in cloud storage too!)
d. Reliable – through both their most reliable connection via the BT home hub

Sky signs deal with Sony for pan-European film rights
Quote:
It means that Sky channels and on-demand services across the Continent will be the first to show Sony’s films on television, including this summer’s Ghostbusters reboot starring Kristen Wiig.

It is understood that Sky has also negotiated rights to broadcast films in ultra-high definition for the first time, so it can provide sharper pictures to subscribers to its new and more expensive Sky Q packages later this year.

The increasing cost of sports rights goes on unabated.

Presumably there will come a point at which they are so expensive that Sky will be forced to wholesale their rights to other content providers, as mooted in the article.

Eventually, the competition and price issues should resolve themselves but I think it will be a long and rocky road getting there.

Pity our watchdogs aren't sold on regulation to force the issue on behalf of consumers. Sky won't do anything like this until it is dragged kicking and screaming to what is fair and reasonable.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Doesn't Sky already wholesale all its Premium Sports and movie channels to VM and Talk Talk ?

In fact even BT has access to its movie channels , Sky don't wholesale all its Sports channels to BT though however BT don't wholesale its sports channels to Sky either so it could be argued they're both as bad as each other.

Yes, I agree but that doesn't make it right.

I think BT are just playing Sky at their own game, but in the meantime it's the customers who lose out and denied the choices that they would rather make.
