Re: Olympics - Brazil 2016
I suppose the next question is, given that we'll finish second in the medals table, do we quit whilst we're ahead?
Is the lottery funding for elite athletes justified or could/should the money be spent elsewhere?
There's clearly a feel good factor in our medal haul but is it enough to justify the outlay? The 'basking in reflected glory' will diminish quickly when the Games close today and we'll come back down to earth with a bump.
Savers continue to be fleeced; pensions plundered and home ownership a pipe dream for many young people.
No gold medals for the unfunded riff-raff and those won at Rio cost several hundred mi££ions.
I enjoyed the Games and we did well. Is it time to say, we know what we can achieve in sport, we're now changing our priorities?

No because the Lottery was introduced exactly for the development of sports and other non tax funded activities .If your suggesting that lottery funds should be diverted to the NHS or used to prop up pensions then i for one could not disagree more strongly

Re: Olympics - Brazil 2016
Some shady judging already, going to end in tears this.
It's done, He's never lost that first round. Second round was close but it's pretty clear the Frenchman won this fight before he'd even climbed into the ring. Gotta love the state of any boxing...

On the contrary we all recognise exactly what the honours system is about and it isn't to reward sportsmen or actors, it's to reward cronies for keeping their mouths shut or doing dirty deeds, the odd sop to an athlete is merely to distract the public from that imo.

Its interesting that the lottery can provide support to the tune of 3/4 billion for elite athletes whilst at the same time 300 swimming pools have shut in the same time frame.

Conlan, Levit and Joyce would all agree with you. Then there was the GB 4x400 DQ'd...
I'm afraid boxing has always been this way because of the money involved and nowadays there is big money sloshing around the Games.
You should do what I do and concentrate on the women's rhythmic gymnasts No, seriously there is some skill and art there although I prefer ribbon, ball and hoop to clubs.
I'm not afraid to show my feminine side
p.s. Just watched the Conlan fight again; I just can't see how the decision went against him. He took a few in the final round but Nikitin was cut up by then.

It's a discipline with a piece of specific apparatus like a tennis racket, golf club, pommel horse or whatever.
I like it anyway. It's a nice alternative to people running in circles or kicking a ball into a net.

You're far too young to be so cynical.

Why is it interesting? The National Lottery is a national initiative set up by central government to fund sport at a national level, and good causes locally. it has precisely zilch-all to do with the provision of local community leisure facilities by councils and never has had; the apparent contrast is entirely spurious. You might as well say it's interesting that my neighbour drives a Range Rover while I have a golf.

I think it interesting and question what the country would benefit more from, elite level athletes possibly winning a medal every four years or sport for all, all year round, that's without even mentioning the legacy that people keep trotting out like a dancing horse, what is the legacy of winning all these medals if the youngsters have no where to train to emulate them, perhaps we can try hothousing anyone under 5 who shows even a glimmer of talent next.
You are right though I am you young to be so cynical

Doesn't sport at a national level start with 5 yr olds learning to swim or run .There are so many of our local facilities gone that it has to wondered where in 10 yrs will the next lot of athletes come from .Swimming pools have closed and even the ones still open are quite a lot of the time only reachable by the closest schools ,more distant schools have to go without .Most schools have sold of the playing fields so sports days are just a small gathering running around the playground .The national lottery could be funding swimming pools ,playing fields ,gymnasiums and sports halls a lot more than they are doing taking some of the burden off the local authorities who don't want to fund them anyway .The likes of Bradley Wiggins,Mo Farah ,Jessica Ennis-Hill will never be short of sponsorship .The moment athletes get to a certain level sponsors fall over themselves to sign them up that's when the Lottery should step aside and fund smaller projects that will benefit more people
