Port forwarding should work. Not sure about WOL, I've never attempted sending WOL magic packets from outside the network but plex should definitely work. To be honest, I'm not sure you even need to forward ports with that as I believe it uses UPnP for that.

i want to be able to access services away from local network...
what i find odd is i have utorrent installed on the mac and i have utorrent remote on my phone and i can connect and find the computer to add torrents...(phone is on either 4g or another wifi network e.g. work)
although other services do not seem to function for example plex... even though thats running too on my desktop mac

Some things use what's called UPnP to automatically open ports on your router. Not everything does, though. I thought plex did but it might not have. You might have to manually forward the port yourself. I know you said you've tried that, but have you restarted plex since then? Plex can be a bit finnicky.

Plex does use UPNP but as you say it's finicky and doesn't always work. I've forwarded the port manually since it only uses one port anyway.

when i go to port checker it shows closed. should i use the default port?
actualy i may try the restart option plex and router to see if it makes difference...
ive also installed dyn dns client so it changes ip and no-ip.com ive entered my public ip address with the ports...
