Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
As part of my subscription to the Times, I got a 12 month free pass to a genealogy site. In 90 minutes of searching, I have been able to trace back to my Nan's grandparents, which makes that my great great grandparents. Unfortunately I have hit a wall there, with no further information to go on.

Ask some idiot in a supermarket where the Hot cross buns are, only for him to say "you do know they are seasonal"

What are you stuck on? Missing on census or can't find marriage lines? Census transcription errors are your worst enemy btw.

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
Just got the name of her grandparents but no further information, so cannot find their parents and so on. I'm wondering if birth certs back in the 1800's had info like mum's name, etc. like today's do.

Birth certificates did yes but the GRO index did not actually record the mothers maiden name until 1911 which can make finding the right certificate difficult in some cases.
Some of the paid sites have certain collections of church records available in fact so do some free sites, just depends which area you are looking at and if they've been digitised at some point unless you want to trundle off down to the local records office and look directly at the microfilms. Church marriage and baptism books are actually more useful than the GRO records in many cases.

Spoke to Dad last and he is seeming more like his old self as he is even talking about a holiday to America now.

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
Peter, thanks for that. Definitely think I might do a bit more on this, interested to know more about my family. Done a bit more on my Grandad's side of the family and traced back a while to find there is some Jewish blood in the family!
den, glad he seems to be improving. A holiday sounds like an excellent idea.

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
Spending time with my wee mum, even though Alzheimer's has taken her memories and changed her personality. I love her and miss the way she was but just happy to spend time with her.

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
Sorry to hear about your Mum Stephen as its terrible how Alzheimer's can strike loved ones down and the only thing l can say is remember her for how she once was and all the wonderful memories that you had with her before it sadly struck her down.
