Sony vaio

Well this problem started around 4 weeks ago it started with random explorer crashes and then software started crashing including itunes, explorer folders then random software. I decided to reformat using the refresh mode I thought great but issues started immediately where file windows would freeze and also updates, say I click on windows explorer the window never change or freeze on searching or fail to copy over.. I thought ok I need to do a complete format and got the message " Repairing Disk Errors, This might take over an hour to complete "

Now I have full four year extended warranty and also never dropped it. If it does come on should I still get it looked into, if not does it sound like a HDD Failure even from start

Yes. You should check the HDD with any good SMART reading software if they want further proof.
