Limit my housemates bandwidth on his wireless connection
Hi guys, is there anyway in which I can throttle the bandwidth supplied from my 10mb cable connection via his wireless connection, we share the bills so i can't just cut of the connection but he is seriously starting to annoy me by using up all the bandwidth by download via limewire, i am constantly crawling via pages and it really pi**ing me off.
I am using a 614+ Wireless router, i know we are the only ones connection since its WEP encrypted and runs via a MAC filter. I am hard wired to the router whereas he is wireless.
any suggestion???

My linksys router has QoS on it have a look for that.Mine allows port based priority settings so any of the 4 ports can be limited.Dont know about wireless though.Edit it can be done by mac address in my router

Re: Limit my housemates bandwidth on his wireless connection
I dont think that there is an easy way of doing it...
You will need some kind of device or software sitting between him and the outside world. Is there not anything on your router that can do it?
There are plugins for things like ISA firewall
http://www.policypatrol.com/Web-filter.htm#User_quotas
But I think that might be a bit over the top somewhat!
There are also things like this
http://bandwidthcontroller.com/index.html
But you need to have that installed on the machine, which is a bit obvious and I suspect you want it transparent?
Not sure if anybody else out there might know of anything?
Can you not just ask him to limit it? So that you are not effected?

Re: Limit my housemates bandwidth on his wireless connection
You only have two options that i can think off, to install something like Netlimiter on his PC (which you would need to be able to install somehow wihtout him being able to remove it) or to ramp down the Wireless speed on the router which would also have an effect on you if you use Wireless too and are not directly connected.
Qos Cannot be done on that router by the look of it Zingle.
EDIT: assuming its a D-Link AirPlus DI-614+, the manual is here

lol, unfortunately yes would prefer transparent, the software choice is obvious but at the same time its unethical me installing software that i can control for his pc.

Re: Limit my housemates bandwidth on his wireless connection
Well, if your connected directly to the router there is still the option of limiting his Wireless connection according to that manual.
But you would need to be connected directly otherwise it would affect you too.

Re: Limit my housemates bandwidth on his wireless connection
If you don't use the wireless yourself, locking it down to 1-2Mbit speed would be a possibility.
It also appears there may be a Linux project for this router, nothing like as advanced or well known as OpenWRT/HyperWRT, which may open the way to alternative firmware which might have QoS as an option.
The only references seem to be early tamperings and fledling or abandoned projects, though once the hardware support is there, one of the other linux router packages would probably port.

Re: Limit my housemates bandwidth on his wireless connection
One other thing, xathras - make sure you've set a password on the router settings. That way, even if your mate twigs, he won't be able to change anything.
