I bet they didn't. I've worked with a few civil servants in my time, reasonably senior ones too. They are extremely good at spotting what not to write down and which conversations are best held in the stairwell rather than via email or telephone.

Ian Hislop made a very good point about the difficulties of providing good investigative journalism and that the methods used maybe considered indefensible by some but when the resulting article reveals murky doings such as corruption then we tend to applaud as a society.

The magazine editor also defended the use of subterfuge by media organisations. He argued that while many industry observers were quick to condemn the methods employed by Mazher Mahmood – the "fake sheikh" at the now-defunct News of the World – they applauded the actions of a reporter at Channel 4's Dispatches, who posed as a lobbyist to expose MPs who agreed to be paid for working for a fictional firm. "It's not always the case that form of journalistic grubbiness is inexcusable," Hislop said.

Personally I've heard more about corruption in local government in Private Eye than I have seen or heard in the more well known news outlets.

It would say that if anyone from News Corp has been reading this thread. You're single-handedly sending its post count into the stratosphere.

Disproportionate?Hell they say so..Possibly a term that many might apply to the illegal phone hacking of Millie Dowler's voice mails and the deletions of said voice mails.

They are trying to defend the indefensible by making out they are the victims now.

A lawyer who advised News International has said that the newspaper publisher was told in 2008 that there were three journalists other than Clive Goodman involved in phone hacking.

Speaking today to the Commons culture, media and sport select committee, Farrer and Co solicitor Julian Pike admitted that he had "not done very much" to debunk the company's claim that hacking was down to just one "rogue reporter". However, he denied being "party to any cover-up".

News Corporation holds its annual meeting later - its first since the phone-hacking scandal broke in the UK.
Some investors are calling for several directors - including Rupert Murdoch and his two sons - to step aside.
Labour MP Tom Watson, who played a prominent role in exposing the scale of phone hacking, has been given a seat at the meeting by shareholders.
He says he plans to make fresh allegations about malpractice by News Corp journalists.
