the upload will certainly help. If it gives you a lag free experience then you will benefit but bare in mind if other users are causing lag you will still suffer glitches

That is only a thought but it may be worth looking into and also check the small print.

Yes I understand perfectly about lag, but you shouldn't get it when your hosting, unless artificially injected

FTTC stands for fibre to the cab if it was fibre to the exchange it would be FTTE If you are really lucky you may get FTTH fibre to the home

Virgin Media has responded to BT's latest broadband announcement by asking why consumers would want to wait for the service, rather than plump for its own super-fast broadband.

BT made a point of comparing its new Infinity service, which will be rolled out to certain areas throughout 2010 to the Virgin flagship 50Mbps service in its release, saying its £19.99 package represents 'a saving of £7.47 per month on Virgin Media's XXL highest speed service'.

Among the points made are that this £20 service comes with an 18-month contract, £50 connection fee and, crucially, is not an unlimited service – not really a like-for-like comparison.

Mid 2012

But it is the roll-out that most interests Virgin Media; BT's service is available in January to some locations, but the target of 10 million homes and businesses that will benefit may have to wait until mid 2012.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: "We're not sure why people in the UK would want to wait for BT's 40Mbps service which hasn't launched yet, when they can already get Virgin Media's great value 50Mbps service.

"Last summer we completed the roll-out of our next generation service to 12.5 million homes and people throughout the country are already enjoying all the fantastic things you can do online with the UK's fastest broadband service.

"We've been saying for years that fibre optic broadband is the future."

10Mbps uploads

BT's second Infinity product offers the 40Mbps download along with an impressive up-to-10Mbps upload speed and an unlimited data tag for £24.99.

The Virgin Media spokesman also reiterated that the company is continuing with its trials of increased upload speeds and that it is looking to roll these out in due course, and that it is still testing a 200Mbps download speed service.

It's no real surprise that Virgin would be pushing its own product on the back of a BT announcement, but when the latter's press release refers directly to the former's products you can't really blame the cable company for responding either.

Outside this thread but there's no 'modulation' to get right, the backhauls are Gigabit or 10 Gigabit Ethernet. There will also be no contention on the backhaul to the exchange, the crunch point will be on the interconnect between BT Wholesale and BT Retail.

I wonder if this service will be traffic shaped as their other services are? Given the pricing I would assume so.

It's a good development though for sure, and here's hoping the extra competition gives us better quality services to choose from in the very near future.

Time for VM to get of their arses that bit faster and upgrade the upload speed. I'm not saying they are doing a bad job, just that the competiton is start to pick up.

No, but AFAIK it's still ADSL, in which case it would depend on the distance to the point where the fibre ends and your twisted copper pair begins - presumably in a cabinet in a street nearby.

its VDSL2 it has a sharp drop off over a short distance if it didnt it could carry 200 meg but its copper from the cab to the house ( unless you are lucky and get FTTH) same as VM copper from the cab

VM will have to make changes to their pricing at some point to remain competitive. BT offering unlimited 40Mb download, 10Mb upload and no connection fee on the £25/month package... obviously it wont be truly unlimited but then neither is virgin with their STM.

VM's 20Mb package is £30/month without the phone and with a puny upload speed... Granted they're planning to improve on upload but it seems to not come close to BT's offering in price... The only real value VM will have after BT's upgrades would be the 50Mb (and in future above) package.

This is unless the BT Infinity packages don't include cost of line rental or if you definitely have to take a phone package.

Granted BT will take years to roll out their new network things can and likely will change,

I'd have thought it almost certain that line rental is not included in those prices. And this is still, at the end of the day, a DSL product, so you will need a phone line.
