That's my usual method I must say.

I'm thinking now I reluctantly have to take my beloved lappy for a repair after I have now exhausted every repair option

Hi Tinky how old is your lap top and what is the spec. I could not upgrade to Windows 10 because my old 32 bit, 2 gig ram, 2.55 GHz processor was not suitable. I purchased a new PC with Windows 10... So far very pleased with 10.

My old lappy can quite happily run W10 I just choose not to do so ATM even though I've been a member of the "Insider" team since day 1.
I use a different PC for that.

How to stay on Windows 7 & 8 forever: Using GWX Control Panel
http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/
downloaded from the above and Win 7 now win 10 free
(caution as always back up important files)
my sons win10 was updated yesterday and removed the majority of his links, files , passwords addons and basically
made his computer unusable seems it didn't like non windows approved apps . Took a day to get it back right again
we have disabled windows update , yes its not reccomended but stops M\S tinkering

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Some people don't like windows 10 because they computer is to slow. CPU is to weak and less memory. So windows 10 will not run smooth. But lag.
And some don't like windows 10 because software or apps or games don't work with windows 10.
Can try linux like lubuntu and dual boot with windows.
Or try LIVE USB or DVD. Or try before installing it.
Windows XP is good for old PC or slow CPU but no more security patches unless you cracking it to 2019. Less support from Web browser and no drivers for new PC.

The Windows 10 updates will not remove your old set up, apps, files etc if you opt to keep them. If you don't like the outcome, restore keeps your old config anyway.

Yes, you have to be careful. Although W10 is generally more efficient and runs better on most machines than W7, older processors might actually give you a worse experience. Indeed W10 won't install if some processors are present.
I have been lucky with my old quadcore machine. I was very impressed with W7, but W10 boots up faster, ( 25 seconds to be usable) and apps run more quickly. I have updated with the most recent W10 build (Version 1511) only last weekend.

I want to upgrade to Windows 10 but i'm on Win7 home at the moment so i'll lose control over how updates are done, that is a big stop block for me.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Speaking to people I know several have hated Win 10, one guy has a friend who owns a computer shop, and has spent ages reinstalling the owners previous OS.
So I'm now edging on NOT upgrading.

I've recently upgraded to an i5 4590, 16Gb of ram and a 256gb Sandisk SSD, Do you think that will be good enough for win10?

Most haters (like me) don't like the spying that Microsoft installs as a matter of course and would like you to go through about 37 option pages to opt out (there is software available now to do it for you)
Also I don't like the Windows 10 GUI and the hoops you have to go through to change the simplest of settings that were easy in Windows 7.
Again there are free 3rd party solutions. Classic Shell is a good one.
