our router has died, recommendations pls for a sophisticated replacement

A long standing lynksys router has given up the ghost, and we need to replace it ASAP. Trouble is we need it to do quite a lot, especially as we need careful control over a 13 year-old internet obsessed lad.

Features needed include :
Wireless N
Time restrictions by MAC or IP address
Web URL restrictions (so we can block sites like YouTube)

It'll connect to our superhub, and of course we want the best speed we can get.

Obviously we don't have an open ended budget. £100 is about the top-end, if we can get what we need nearer to £50 I'd be happier.

So advice & anecdotal experience welcome pls.

this would do it but as ever when anyone on here mentions controlling kids what ever you use is easily bypassed by any tec savy kid really your only control is being there or the possibility of you walking past

The best is over budget an Apple time capsule which is also a back-up devise. But the next is an Apple Airport Extreme which will be a tadge over budget. On budget an Apple Airport express. They are well worth the money and if you have an iPhone you can access the information of the devise.......

Block at the router and password protect the router GUI? cant see a child getting around that?

and or linking to someone else local unprotected network

buying their own dongle

many other options believe me not much you can do if they want to get on just ask your local schools network manager

If they get wet they don't like water but all my apple product work fine. So whats wrong with the three iPhones you have that are not working.....

That does have its advantages but my Apple TV Mk 1 is getting to me as I can't get Game of Thrones to work on it...

Woo guys, first of all Apple tech not accepted in this house. We have been there, done that, and decided not to be constrained by Apple any more.

Second, we do keep an eye on the lad. No TV or PC in his bedroom, he uses his tech in family rooms so generally we know what he is about. But he has a tablet, and we have been restricting internet access, so he can't logon between 8pm & 8am. We need a router that will continue to allow us to do that. That way he can take his tablet to bed to read kindle books, & we know he isn't face booking at 3am or whatever.

I take on board that any bright teen can get round restrictions, but
a) he isn't yet left unsupervised for long periods to get the opportunity to experiment with ways to get round the rules
B). He knows that if he cheats the system, we would simply ban PC and tablet us altogether (we don't want to have to do that)

Putting technical obstacles in his way just stops the regular arguments about what is and isn't allowed.

all three stuck in endless update cycles none of the usual programs can do anything

on back burner now till some programs update busy making lego guns with son for now
