Oil - Argentina upping the ante...
Quote:
The Argentine government will seize a controlling interest in oil company YPF owned by Spanish firm Repsol.
President Cristina Fernandez said a bill will be presented to the Senate allowing the government to expropriate 51% of YPF shares.

That'll go down well in Madrid.

The move, announced on national television, was welcomed by her cabinet and Argentine governors.

I wonder if it'll be 'welcomed' by the foreign companies and investors her country so badly needs to keep it afloat.

Re: Oil - Argentina upping the ante...
I do not understand their motivations? Why would they want to alienate/antagonise another country? Especially one more likely to be receptive to their Falklands claim...

Re: Oil - Argentina upping the ante...
Maybe they would use YPF to drill for oil in the Falklands?
That have been taking back control of businesses they have sold off for some time now (like their national airline)
Also, I think that Spain has now joined our side in the issue of the Falklands!

Kirchner is a third-division amateur when it comes to geopolitics. As with the Falklands issue, this move is all about internal Argentine concerns. When it comes to foreign affairs, she seems to think all she has to do is tell other governments how she sees things and watch them fall into line behind her.

So she really is that stupid?
I don't understand the legalities of this anyway, how can a government take a controlling stake in another country's company?

For an example of how states can, and do, nationalise foreign-owned assets located in their territories, see "Suez Crisis".
And yes, she really is that stupid. Right now, she can't quite understand why the British delegation still hasn't turned up to talk about the Falklands.

Re: Oil - Argentina upping the ante...
She's doing what many desperate leaders have done - dredging up a populist cause in order to deflect scrutiny of her own performance and her country's internal problems. Her predecessors in the 1980s made the same mistake for the same reasons.

Thanks to her, Argentinas allies are dropping in number, which is good news for our claim to the Falklands

It's not the first Spainish asset to be nationalized, in 2008 they took back control of AerolĂ*neas Argentinas (Their National Airline) from Spanish based Grupo Marsans (who owned Air Comet until it went bust in 2009)
