There's no skill in penalties, you just decide which way to go and you are either lucky and save it or they score, that isn't good goalkeeping.
do you know how long into our season before VDS failed to communicate with Rio and he got annoyed with him
2 mins into the season it happened
That's 3 years Rio has been telling him to open his stupid mouth and tell him what's going on and he still hasn't learned. At this level that isn't good enough. We aren't Man City we are meant to be the greatest club in the world and challenge for the European Cup and League. How can you do that if your keeper can't open his mouth and tell your defenders what's going on ?
When they had a free kick after 20 odd mins they put the ball right into the 6 yard box, the ball went straight past VDS who didn't even move and then went inches past Malouda who could have put the ball into the net. It's ok though as VDS had his arm up Not sure when they teach that one in training.. don't do anything just stick your arm up and hope the attackers don't make contact with the ball.

I bet he wasn't asking to be told what's going on, more like pestering VDS to appear on his Beadle About type tv show It does seem strange though that VDS doesn't command the area more, after all he has all the experience, is tall and quite imposing so

well for 3 years now Rio has been moaning at VDS and asking why he never opens is mouth and tells him what's going on. For a keeper that is meant to be world class the fact that he never tells anyone just isn't good enough,. neither is the fact that he hasn't learnt to tell Rio either. At the level we are at this sort of thing happening twice isn't good enough. As it's gone on for 3 years I can't see this changing. Sure Rio isn't the brightest bloke in the world but he's still a decent defender.
VDS stands there on the goal line watching the whole game FFS surely he can see what is happening and tell others, that's meant to be part of a keepers job.
As you said he doesn't have a good command of his area as he no longer knows when to come of his line and when not to.. he starts to come . stops and then does neither.
When Chelsea had a free kick and put the ball in the box and missed Malouda's head by an inch he hadn't even moved.
i think part of the problem with United fans as that they don't always know alot about football, they see the list of trophies some of these players have won, or they they scored or made a save and assume they must have been brilliant.

Going the right way can be deemed to be lucky but its also how you react when you go the right way. For example VDS went the right way for Piazzaro's pen but he still had to react to get his hand up as the ball was hit high above him. To me that was more to do with skill and quick reaction than solely down to luck.
As for the other pens he went the right way and was lucky that the penalties were so poor!

That made me laugh! Not everyone is a trophy/glory hunter.
VDS has is problems, but I do think that he is the best goalie that we have had since Schmeichel. Do you not remember Roy Carroll and Barthez's off-side wave? I am not too impressed by Kuszcyk...out of the two, it's VDS for me...
So, who would you have as a replacement then?

True some United fans do know alot but some just think if the team wins the must have done well and if players are in the team then they are great. Not saying that's what everyone is like on here though
Yes he is the best we have had since Schmeichel but looking at who that is comparing him against it doesn't say alot. I would prefer Foster as i think if the two had swapped places last year VDS would have been rubbish at Watford. Having Rio and Vidic in front of him helps him out alot.
Unfortunely I don't think he will get any better now or learn to speak to Rio, something he's been asking for three years for. U think TK can get better than he is at moment but he has his moments too. Roll on Foster coming back

It's just that you seem to have been "wronged" by him somehow...like he's splashed you with a puddle, when he's driven by you and didn't say sorry.
I mean Rio has done quite a few howlers, which has cost us a goal, yet I don't see him getting the same treatment. Darren Fletcher, what about him? Waste of space, in my opinion, yet no where near the same level of treatment.
TK, in my opinion, should only ever be the 3rd choice goalie. 10th, if I had my way...now watching him in goal is a bad experience...

Re: Close Season Gossip & Rumour Thread
TBH, Schmeichel is the only absolutely top class keeper United have had in over 50 years and I have seen them all from Harry Gregg onwards. Thankfully the United ethos has always been to attack with speed, style and passion. They do come unstuck now and again, they do concede sloppy goals but by eck, it has made them the best side in England to watch consistently for all of that 50 years.
Jim.

If you pass back to the keeper, you at least look to see where he is positioned, on top of that, and it's a fundamental rule, never pass back towards the goal, only to the side of it.
I am sure that if Foster had followed Schmeichel, he would be getting the same treatment as VDS on this forum in some peoples eyes .
Just think, it could be worse.
Schmeichel is a very hard act to follow, and will be for some time to come as far as MUFC are concerned

Foster and TK are both young keepers so you expect the odd mistake now and again from them
VDS is meant to be world class but he flaps at the ball, gets beaten at the near post and punches the ball ALL the time instead of catching it in his hands.
I never felt he was good enough for us when he signed in, but because of what he's won in the past I feel we've kept him when he should have brought ina younger and better keeper long before. For a so called stop gap he's been at the club far too long

Re: Close Season Gossip & Rumour Thread
What about Neville passing the ball back in the Croatia game, and, err scoring.
Was he never taught to backpass so it would go out for a corner?

yeah that was bad but the Rio would have have been solved by someone actually talking to him and telling Rio where he was.. something that you wuld have thought since it led to a goal would have been worked on but so far it doesn't look like it.
Being English i'm better at moaning than saying well done
On another forum i'm on people were saying they were worried about VDS and he did make a few mistakes in the game, although I don't blame him for the goal as it was one on one so I expect the keeper to be beaten then, but because he got lucky and guessed the right way for the pens everyone on that forum was saying how great he was. That's what I mean about some United fans no knowing a lot about football.
Fergie is a great manager but we have had some dire players over the years, Fletcher, Richardson and Phil Neville being up there with the best yet when we had a great talent with Rossi he never really got a chance.
Still it was only one game and roll on the start of the season on Saturday, maybe we need a new thread for that now.
Bit annoyed this season as Dad can't really get to any United games so looks like I will be an armchair fan this season. Should get to more Palace games instead and also has Bromley Town have been promoted and they are alot cheaper I might see them once or twice too.
