Re: Terror arrests in Luton
There are many anti terrorist operations going on that we know nothing about. And we only find out about them when they are concluded. Remember the liquid bomb plot that was planned to bring down up to 14 passenger airliners, and the many other terrorist plots that have been foiled over recent years.
Terrorists want to make a huge impact, and do as their name suggests 'cause terror'. If they put people off coming to the olympics, then it would be a huge financial blow to the UK, and a huge goal for the terrorists. So for this reason this reason the government's and the security services backsides are really twitching in the run up to the olympics.

Some nut job but then I don't believe Al- Qaeda is anything more than a name now so this if it turns out to be Olympic terrorist based, they would just be some more nut jobs imo.

Indeed any nut job out there can suggest he is a member of Al Qaeda just to get him self more attention from the media.

Re: Terror arrests in Luton
Whether it's Al Qaeda or the Barmy Army. as long as there's any action it will ruin the games.
I'm sure there's a lot of people coming here asking if there's a possibility of a Muslim/Terrorist thing. and I'm sure the British government is asking the same thing as well as telling those asking not to worry, and that it's all under control.
then they go and remind them about the recent nationwide riots they had all under control.

Re: Terror arrests in Luton
Apparently there's chaos in the Tottenham Court Road area and the tube there as a result of some lone maniac who's holed up in an office. It seems he may be a disgruntled employee and there's reports that he's got gas canisters strapped to him but of course that could be just Chinese whispers and media exaggeration at work.
He'll probably turn out to be a sad idiot with no terrorist links whatsoever but it all goes to show how the police can't take any chances so have to lock things down. In a major city like London that's going to very rapidly cause widespread chaos.
The sad truth is that if the terrorists (or anyone else for that matter) want to bring London to a halt it only needs a few of them to emulate this guy and they'll do a very nice job.

Apparently there's a 300-400m area totally cordoned off so you can imagine what the effects of that will be.
I think it's overkill (especially as there's no reports of terrorists or other people involved in the neighbouring area) but of course the police would be torn to shreds if they took a chance and someone got hurt as a result so it's understandable and chaos will ensue.

And banging on about the railways, airports and 'reputation' systems... lol.....
Seriously, it sounds like this guy is a very disgruntled HGV driver, a 50 year old guy who's very hacked off about the way he's been treated by a training company apparently. Let's hope he doesn't get himself shot.
Guess the police response will be scrutinised in minute detail given the upcoming Olympics.

The cordon is most likely to be for a number of reasons: - In case the cannisters carry a highly toxic, or biological agent
- To keep the press away
- In case a sniper bullet goes astray
There are all sorts of nutters out there (as we know), who will use the terrorism fear to bring attention to one cause or another. You only have to look at that nutter in Scandinavia. Even these individuals can be as dangerous as groups.

Re: Terror arrests in Luton
It seems they've now got a good idea who he is and that he's not armed apart from the gas bottles on him. I think it's safe to say he probably isn't going to be embarking on some sort of massacre as if he'd wanted to do that he'd have done it by now and has missed his chance, but it does illustrate the point that a single individual armed with very little can bring C. London to a halt.
I'm just hearing on Sky that the company involved are alleged to have a rather dubious track record when it comes to delivering on promises made then going into liquidation then resurfacing again. If that's true and he feels he's a victim of some scam, it might explain why this guy's gone nuts.
Anyway, the budding terrorists, activists and attention seekers out there will no doubt be taking note of how easy it is to cause chaos. If their aim isn't actually carnage and martyrdom, then I dare say that'll suit them nicely.

Apparently the guy has been arrested unharmed. Great for him, good practice for the police but horrendous for eveyone else...
