Re: Government spends £30m on agency staff after civil servant redundancies

It's true,

I have a friend that was made redundant by the local authority, and then almost immediately taken on, on a temporary contract on near three times the money.

I've seen it happen over the years in the private sector too.

It's all to do with where abouts the money is held.

On one hand the wage bill is reduced, but the "projects" budget goes up.

It's just balance sheet slight of hand.

Correct and it's been happening for years. It's an utter disgrace.

Politicians hiding, disguising or shifting expenditure eh? The 'last lot' were rather good at that too weren't they....

Oh, so true. If there is a way to waste money you can be sure that some clever clogs in a high ranking position will find a way to do so ...and probably get a promotion as a result of his innovative manipulation of facts and figures.

Sorry but my long years of being a Civil Servant have made me incapable of showing any surprise at the results of succeeding Government's attempts to look as though they had any control of business expenses.

its common practice in the private sector for sure, seen it in many companies. It usually costs more as the agencies have to make a cut, but its been justified by managers as it allows them to flexibly change staffing levels. Tories trying to run the government as a business?

Another major downside is its trading long term permanent jobs which provide security and consumer confidence for short temporary jobs. Another measure which is anti growth.
