If Facebook charged a subscription would it be as big as it is now? You want something for free you have to accept adverts etc. BUT you dont have to join the club.

Look at the T&Cs of most of the social sites. They can sell any of the content to any organisation without you even knowing. Just think about it when you next upload a photo that shows anything tracable to you, your family, your house etc. or you say anything that you wouldn't shout from the rooftops.
Even if it's not actively sold there are web bots that harvest this information for gain.
