'Killer robots' to be debated at UN

Quote:
The meeting will be held during the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW).

A report on the discussion will be presented to the CCW meeting in November.

This will be the first time that the issue of killer robots, or lethal autonomous weapons systems, will be addressed within the CCW.

A killer robot is a fully autonomous weapon that can select and engage targets without any human intervention. They do not currently exist but advances in technology are bringing them closer to reality

The first image that popped in to my head was the ED209's from Robocop shooting people. Next thought was when Robocop got fired so was able to bypass the control that stopped him shooting his employer. The future is almost here!

Typical that our first thoughts with new technologies is to use them to kill people.

I don't recall reading about these in my 'Tomorrow's World' annual...

I wonder if the invited delegates have been given 15 seconds to comply.

My fear is that if the likes of the USA can produce a true autonomous robot they will be more likely to use them. Imagine if they had used something like that in Afghanistan to clear out compounds instead of there infantry.

One can't help but wonder if the only thing Paul Verhoeven and James Cameron got wrong was the timing...

Re: 'Killer robots' to be debated at UN

couldn't they be programmed to merely disable the human target, again a bit like Robocop where he merely shot their knee caps etc?

For accuracy, you are always taught to aim for the largest target (the body).
