Is it possible to run this alongside Kaspersky?

The only reason i ask is i was talking to a neighbour earlier today that bought a new PC from PC World. They advised him to also install MSE even though he has 12 months of mcafee thrown in.

This is the PC he bought if you need to know the spec.

MSE is now called Windows Defender and I always thought it was already installed as part of MS Windows.

When I installed kaspersky I am sure it automatically disabled the Defender AV but left the windows firewall in place.

Nope........ only run 1 Antivirus at a time there is no point running 2 and it will slow things down.

Make sure you disable Windows Defender(MSE) if you have the other installed.

p.s ignore the crap Pcworld say they're clueless.

I agree with SnoopZ. The only thing I run along side my Antivirus is the free version of Malwarebytes

Not quite. It's a bit confusing. Windows Defender became MSE. Then when MSE got integrated into the OS they renamed it back to Windows Defender.

All the warnings about not installing more than one antivirus program were based around severe incompatibilities that occurred in the pre-2011 era. Those concerns are no longer as relevant today. That said, while one argument against having multiple AVs still applies (slight performance hit) the strongest argument for having MSE as well also applies - the vast majority of people forget or neglect to renew their standalone AV programs after the trial expires, thus leaving them with a false sense of security when they actually have practically no protection. This is why Microsoft integrated it into the OS and why it's generally a good idea to leave it on unless you are absolutely certain you will not forget to maintain your standalone AV properly.

This only applies to Win 8 onwards, for earlier windows o/s it's still known as Microsoft Security Essentials.

Well yeah, of course, it wasn't integrated into the OS in earlier OS's prior to it being integrated into the OS...

If you have Kaspersky, you don't need anything else, it's the best IMHO

Used to use Avast for years; became to top heavy and resource consuming plus gave some false postives. Switched to MSE, much more in the background light and efficient.

Think its more important just to be sensible on what you click rather than which AV you use.

MSE is pretty poor as an AV compared to others according to reviews. I still use AVast here no issues so far.

I got fed up with Avast and had a look around to see what else was being recommended and found Panda Free Antivirus 2015.

It seemed to do well in the AV Test site and have good right-ups.

I have been using it for several weeks now and it seems to be working well on my laptop. Start up times have certainly been cut and as long as you don't feel happy unless you can fiddle with setting I can certainly recommend it. You do get the odd pop-up inviting you to upgrade to the paid version but I just seems to be the one time per internet session.

Absolutely, most viri etc get in from deliberate user actions, the easiest mistake being to click on a file or link and expect the correct application to open. As a double check I always open the application and then let it open the file. If the file isn't what the app is expecting it'll flag it up.

Another horror is the download that also carries an extra payload or that "helpful" installer.

I ran my old laptop with no protection other than an external firewall for over three years and a recent checkup with AVG showed clean as a whistle.

I used Panda Internet Secruity for one year and it was ok but the email scanning part was just odd. Sometimes it would allow files from trusted sources through and othertimes would block saying they could be dangerous and we are not talking program files we are talking picture files like JPG.

Not had any such problems yet but will keep my eyes open. Thanks for warning, hopefully the issues you faced have been sorted in this 2015 version..
