Slow Connection

Hello,

Got my internet from Virgin (25mb) and my download speed reaches at most 250 kb/sec, which isn't what i pay for, additionally whenever i play games and someone else from my family goes on internet i get those lags and ping spikes, usually it stays at 40, but when someone goes on for example youtube, it automatically goes up to 800 or even more, and this makes the game unplayable. I know that whenever you go on Youtube it downloads, but the thing is that non of my friends get this problem it is just me, but they not using Virgin, and finally my qustion is, what causes all these problems, and why dont i get the speed that im paying for (I'm connected by a cable, not wireless)

It is worth of adding that my modem is quite old, its been like 3 or 4 years since i bought it. Thought i maybe need to configure my modem properly or something.

Any thoughts?
