The Scottish government has announced plans to reduce the country's drink-drive limit in time for Christmas.
Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill has taken steps which, if approved by the Scottish Parliament, would mean a new limit being introduced on 5 December.
Under the plans, Scotland's blood alcohol limit would be cut from 80mg to 50mg in every 100ml of blood.

I'd personally say that there are more people unfit to drive through drugs than there are drunk.
and that it's 365 days a year compared to mainly around Xmas.
these are the same people that are not indicating and wanting to race me all the time.

Re: Common sense at last [Scottish Drink Drive Limit]
First morning of the new limit and a bunch of arrests already.
Will be interesting to see how many fell foul of the new limits and how many would have failed anyway.

Seemingly 5 caught this morning. Unbelievable given the coverage in Scotland over the past few days. Just shows the arrogance of some drivers who choose to ignore the rules.

Pretty sure you'd get a similar number of arrests on any morning if you throw enough cops at it and have the resources to set up checkpoints.

Re: Common sense at last [Scottish Drink Drive Limit]
The biggest problem is in my view is this. If you have a drink BEFORE you drive, then that is wrong.
BUT, if you drink the night before, and then sleep for eight hours. How can you be over the limit the following morning.

Spose it depends how much you drink the night before. 2 pints you will probably be fine but 6 or 7, who knows?

Because of how long your body takes to break the alcohol down and when you sleep your metabolism slows right down.

agreed. and this is really the issue. the law is being changed when really the issue is one of resources, which keep getting cut. there is already a law in place to prevent drink-driving, but no feasible way to enforce it at this point. not too unlike the high number of middle-lane drivers still seen on the motorways even though law has been passed to help prevent it happening. telling someone they're not allowed to do something before they do it is not the same as telling them off for actually doing it. the later will be more effective and more of a deterrent if people thought there was a high chance of actually being caught.
