Re: Ebola 'out of control' in West Africa: MSF
What happened to the mandatory 21 day quarantine for medical workers? How did she manage to come into contact with her husband and 3 others? It's sloppy. Now medical staff treating her should be screened and quarantined. It's harsh but pretty simple. If you've directly treated someone with Ebola you can't just go on with your daily routine and assume you haven't got it, therefore possibly passing it on. Who's her husband been in contact with? Who have the three others been in contact with? It's a mess. Hopeless by the Spanish. We've set a fairly good example of how it should be done.
For something that shouldn't be widespread it's managed to land in 3 major nations thus far. I think we're being led to believe it's harder to catch than it actually is. By scientists rights then it is hard to catch assuming all breakout procedures are followed but there's 3 individual cases where it hasn't been followed. The British one was dealt with according but the Dallas patient apparently had contact with up to 80 people and we're awaiting the outcome of that given the 20+ day period it can show no symptoms. Same now applies to the Spanish.

American Ebola patient in Dallas dies. Wonder if they'll start taking this a bit more seriously now. Hopefully none of those in contact have been infected otherwise they could've exposed themselves to something really worrying given the 30+ people he came into contact with will also have contact with others.

Well the authorities in Madrid have euthanised an Ebola sufferer's dog, so obviously that's their outbreak contained.

Looks like HMG is:

The UK is sending 750 military personnel to Sierra Leone to help deal with the deadly Ebola outbreak, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has confirmed.

Hope they've also arranged for something a bit better than a poly-tunnel to isolate anyone infected who's brought back here...

It's also been revealed the Spanish nurse likely contracted it through touching her face after working on the Ebola infected priests. Given the images of medical workers in hazmat suits and whatnot I find it annoying this nurse was equipped with nothing but a set of gloves and a face mask. Euthanasia on 'Ebola Dogs' and shoddy medical procedures. Pretty crappy quarantine if a nurse in basic medical gear is walking in and out. Leave it to the Spanish.
Quote:
While it could have been the mistake of the nurse, I would like to point out that they were NOT trained to handle the Ebola virus. It has been stated in the media that the nurses were only given a 20 minute training on how to put on and take off the suit.
In some cases they didn't get appropriate training and had to figure out on their own or had to patch their suits with duct tape because they were not properly closed. Futhermore, the suits used were designed for level 2 infectious diseases while Ebola is known to be a level 4 disease.
This has been confirmed by the different nurses who have been working with the last two ebola patients in Spain and who received very little training. They were not prepared at all for such a highly infectious disease.
While it was the nurse's error, the administration is at fault for not properly preparing for such a situation and yet insisting in brining to Madrid the two infected missionaries.

Appears the gear was fine and down to them being given a crash course in the gear and treating Ebola. Assuming when she took it off she touched her face. Can't say I'd have a clue but someone has to answer for the lack of training. I can't imagine being shoved in a suit I've never worn before then told to go treat a viral killer.

I wonder how many people still think that all overseas aid should be stopped in light of this outbreak?

Hearing reports that there's potentially another Ebola patient in Dallas now. Appears to be a local media thing at the minute. Directly related to the US 'patient zero'
Quick everyone flock to Madagascar. (Hope some of you get that)

Precautionary measure it seems. Seems doubtful he'd have it. Although if he does then I'd say they're in big trouble.

Yes I was wondering that. Some folks like to whinge a lot about the UK's overseas aid but could well be turning up here shortly banging on about why more hasn't been done to stop this...
What we need to better ensure is that what aid we give gets to where it's supposed to go rather than lining the pockets of corrupt officials. A good mate of mine has lived in the Philippines for years. According to him, much of the foreign aid donated to help the tsunami victims still hasn't got to them but has been siphoned off by the usual suspects.
My view is that the countries involved in this outbreak ought to be quarantined and no outward travel allowed until it's run its course.
