One step closer

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22275000

Quote:

The government has signed a mutual assistance treaty with Jordan to ensure that radical cleric Abu Qatada can be extradited, Theresa May has told MPs.

The home secretary said the treaty had guarantees on fair trials within it.

The government is doing "everything it can" to deport Abu Qatada, she said.

The move comes after she failed to get the case referred to the Supreme Court to reverse a ruling that the radical cleric could face an unfair trial if sent to Jordan to face terror charges
At least she keeps trying.

Quote:

Mrs May is to apply directly to the Supreme Court for permission to challenge that ruling.

The treaty would come into play should the Supreme Court reject the government's request.

Excellent

It would be much easier and cheaper for him to accidentally slip on a banana skin, and wake up with a 308 slug in his noggin. ;)

Qatada 'Will Return To Jordan' If Law Agreed

http://news.sky.com/story/1089177/qa...-if-law-agreed

Quote:

The radical cleric says he will voluntarily go back to Jordan if a no torture treaty is ratified as his bid for bail is adjourned. Abu Qatada has agreed to voluntarily return to Jordan if the country's parliament ratifies a treaty with the UK guaranteeing that he will not be tortured.

His co-operation was announced by his barrister, Edward Fitzgerald QC, at the beginning of an immigration tribunal to decide whether Qatada could be released from prison.
Whats he up to ?

Isn't it obvious, he hates us, our country and everything it stands for, it stands to reason he'd want to get out of here asap, I'm only surprised it's taken him so long to suggest it.
;)

Well if Jordon agrees not to torture him then he probably knows that he'll be off anyway.

Whats he up to ?

He's jumping before he's pushed. One of his lawyers has told him once the treaty is ratified he will lose any court case based on it, so he might as well walk out voluntarily and make himself look like the principled good guy.

Jordanian parliament ratifies the treaty:

Quote:

The treaty is now awaiting approval by Jordan's King Abdullah - the final key stage before the deal becomes law.
The vote in Parliament means the process to deport the radical cleric is likely to resume within weeks.

His right to a family life surely compels us to load them all on the plane with him.
