Sutton, Surrey

Received in this morning's post a letter advising that our broadband speed has been doubled 10-> 20.

Checked Usain's page which says it's 10mb still.

Checked on speedtest.net: says it's 5.7mb (as ever)

Am I missing something or do I need to do something to activate?

Note: our modem is 7 year old Motorola

If you have a Black motorola (SB5100) or an SB4100 (white/cream) then you should be able to hit 20mbit without an issue. Are you connected directly in or are you using a router with wireless (this will affect speeds)?

It does sound like you're still on 10Mbit however, you may need to ring them up to get the boost but you should see more than 5.7Mbit.

If it's even older (SB3100) then they weren't capable of even 10Mbit.

Log in to MyVirginMedia. There should be a self upgrade option where the double up top is stated. Get the SuperHub if theres the option.

VM upgrade my 50mbps to 100 around the 31st December, I've just tried Speedtest and have got the following results
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2013/01/29.png
Guess this means i'm now on 120mbps as when I tried it yesterday I got 124mbps

I'm in Leeds and was informed that it would be later in 2013 before I would be upgraded to 120mbps

Why on earth have they set the upstream at exactly 12000000 bps? They haven't allowed for overheads.

I know that the headline is probably "up to 12Mb", but with that setting nobody will achieve it, ever. Why can't VM deliever the 12Mb upstream they said they would? Doesn't this risk a clash with the regulator? Surely VM networks have enough capacity to allow just that little extra waffer thin room for overheads.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the ASA only cares about advertised speeds, VM doesn't advertise the upload speeds, just the download speeds so they can get away with this.

They have allowed for protocol agnostic overheads. That 12Mbps is 12Mbps of data, excluding what you call "overheads". Though what you and I call overheads are probably different.

But yes, VM don't advertise upstream speeds anymore, they can set it to whatever they want, as long as it averages more than ~2.5Mbps...

12 Mbps upload is still rubbish. BT FTTC upload are the best 19 Meg! (that's 7 Meg more than VM) ;)

7Mb difference? It took me ages to work that out. Your maths is phenomenal. Did you go to grammar school?
