BT plans to double broadband speeds

# 19 October 2011, 11:11 by Chris T

BT plans to double the speed of its top-tier home broadband services.

In a statement, the company headlined its intention to ramp up the speed of its Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) service to 300Mb.

However, with FTTP available to very few UK homes, the more significant announcement is the increase in its top-tier Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC) offering from 40Mb to 80Mb. This is the service available to most homes in areas BT has upgraded to its Infinity branded broadband services.

BT says that more than 5 million homes now have access to Infinity services and the company will have spent £2.5 billion by 2015 on the network upgrades necessary.
