ntl to hike prices in June?

# 31 March 2005, 14:51 by Frank

Entertainment website DigitalSpy is reporting today that previously reliable sources have indicated that cableco ntl is planning to change prices on some of its services come June 1, 2005.

Their information indicates that the monthly price of ntl’s digital television base package will increase by £2, with all other packages going up by £1. The £1 increase will be applied to the phone line rental that is part of all TV packages.

The sources also indicate that some pricees will also be decreasing. ntl’s telephony package Talk Unlimited Local will decrease by £2 per month from £14.50 to £12.50, and Talk Unlimited will drop by £3 to £15.50. Also planned are cheaper rates [PDF] for calls to mobile phones, currently between 20p and 25p per minute during the daytime. Connection charges for calls made to premium numbers are indicated to increase by up to 10p per call.

Broadband prices will apparently remain steady, but in a push to upsell broadband to customers, dial-up users will see £1 per month increase in their bill.

We contacted ntl CEO Simon Duffy, who declined to confirm or deny the changes, reasoning: “It simply reflects the we have a policy of announcing changes (if any) to the prices or other commercial terms of our products in an orderly fashion to all our customers at the same time…”

He also indicated that ntl’s response to any such “rumours” would be “No Comment” in the future.
