Question Astraweb newsgroup problems anyone?

Ive been having problem with my news server Astraweb for the past 3 days. It is normally really good and I can get headers and download at 550kbps

However, for the past 3 days I have been getting very erratic speeds of between 50 and 300kbps, with occasions where it grinds to a halt

Is anyone else with Astraweb having the same problems? It's been playing up since the major DNS outage last week. All other aspects are fine HTTP and FTP downloads are fast.

I want to know whether it is my news server or whether there is a problem with NNTP over NTL. Astraweb say they know of no problems at their end. Is anyone else having problems with Astraweb or any other news server?

Thanks for your help in advance

Andy

Re: Astraweb newsgroup problems anyone?

I'm getting same problem and it seems to be affecting all nlt customers with astraweb (from other forums).

Connections to other news-servers is ok and connection to astraweb from other uk ISPs is also fine.

I've mailed astraweb support but I dont expect a fast reply. Their support sucks and its thanksgiving. NTL cusomer services just tell me their's no problems their end.

Maybe traffic is still being routed around the damaged trans-atlantic cable that seems to have caused NTL's dns crash although I believe the cable is now repaired. Wish someone would sort this one soon out though.

Anyone one else with any clues ?

Re: Astraweb newsgroup problems anyone?

Well I'm glad to hear its not just a problem with my connection. I mailed Astraweb on Thursday afternoon but havent heard back yet

Im in Stafford btw so it sounds as if it may be a nationwide problem

sfx>What other forums are discussing this. I would like to see others views / problems with this.

Thanks

Andy

P.S. I will keep emailing Astraweb tech support until I get a satisfactory answer. If everyone does the same they may take notice. The problem is that I fear that it may be an NTL problem and they will keep passing the buck

Re: Astraweb newsgroup problems anyone?

I've had no particular problem with Astraweb, all NNTP feeds slow down during "primetime" even when HTTP and FTP are OK.

This isn't slowdown, the speed actually goes FULL for 10 secs NOTHING for 10 secs etc... and its all the time not just primetime!

Quite a few NTL users (it appears only NTL users are affected) are discussing this here: http://forums.newsbin.com/viewtopic.php?t=7481

Could you post a tracert to news.astraweb.com to see if you are taking a different route to the rest of us?

The opinion seems to be the problem lies somewhere between NTL and Astraweb, which is frustrating to say the least!

Re: Astraweb newsgroup problems anyone?

I have a BT connection and it has been painfully slow since the weekend, max speed of around 30KB/s but averaging at about 15kb/s. emailed astraweb and they said to try different ports and the europe server and is still slow. It is better today averaging about 26kb/s but way off what it should be.

Re: Astraweb newsgroup problems anyone?

You do realise this thread is nearly 2 years old?

I'm downloading right now from Astraweb @ 1.8mbps (on NTL Cable) on the pbdl server, so no problems there and suggest kicking BT up their user port as it appears they always have speed problems, at least everytime I go to a mates who's on BT 1mbps and it's a slow as hell!

Re: Astraweb newsgroup problems anyone?

I did notice the post date after I posted.

It has been really quick downloading, getting good speeds. But since last weekend it just slowed to a halt. But if your speeds are good, it rules out an astraweb problem. Thanks for the reply.

Have you tried the European server?

I couldn't get consistently fast downloads from the main (USA) server or the pbdl server. Using Grabit, I had to try each of the 8 connections until I found a good one. Using the European server, I get a constant 360kB/s on all connections on my 3Mb service.
