Don't just consider fuel, consider wear and tear etc as well.

I think that the most HMRC will allow you to claim is 40p per mile, and that seems to be about the standard - don't forget that you'll have to pay the tax on that (along with any other earnings obviously).

I think there is a case for fifty pence a mile. The set HMRC allowance has been in place for quite a few years, when the price of petrol was at about seventy-five pence a litre.

There may be a 'case', but you'd have trouble justifying it and would most likely get stung on the taxation.

Looking around the taxi game, the average seems to be somewhere around 10-15p a mile

I get 53p per mile (for under 1500cc its 43p, for over its 53p iirc). But i don't receive a lump sum each month so that needs to take into account wear and tear etc.

Re: how much should i charge for expenses (fuel/mileage) what's the average?

The form from HMRC is for essential car users who HAVE to use their vehicle as part of their job and either have a company car or a car allowance. If you are only doing the occasional bit of consulting the mileage charge is up to you. Worked with a guy 20 years ago who charged 60p mile for a motorbike for private investigation work (we only paid him 20p for the work he did for us).

Part of the excuse given for the mileage charge staying steady for so long is the engines are more efficient now. Doesn't help much if you are running an older less fuel efficient model.

Do make sure your insurance covers this type of use.

AA running costs

A good basis to determine if you are likely to make a real profit or loss on your charges.
