Social media madness

Quote:
A Minnesota woman has been charged over the fatal shooting of her boyfriend, in what authorities say was a social media stunt gone wrong.
Monalisa Perez, 19, was booked into county jail after shooting at Pedro Ruiz as he held a book to his chest, believing it would stop the bullet.
The couple's three-year-old child and nearly 30 onlookers watched as she fired the fatal bullet into his chest.
Ruiz's aunt said they did it to increase their social media following.

Where is this going to end I wonder? It seems to me that the pursuit, by users, of such things as fame, ratings, views, intimidation, notoriety and even radicalisation, social media has allowed itself to be abused in this manner and not really done very much to prevent it. Yes some people have done very nicely out of living their lives on social media but a great many more don't and either wind up the victims of a global array of bullies/sexists/racists etc. or become so obsessed with acquiring views/likes they wind up hurting people, jeopardising their careers or even killing themselves. Are these people the acceptable collateral damage in the world of social media or do the companies concerned need to be far more proactive in trying to control what they allow to be broadcast?

A .50 calibre Desert Eagle

A firearm developed by the Israeli military to penetrate the engine block of a vehicle. What could possibly go wrong?

You only have to watch Mythbusters to know the answer:

Starts 25:50

Book? 357 Magnum makes it all the way through.

Way to miss the point.

We are not far away from the positives of social media being outweighed by
the negatives.
There needs to be a total ban on people filming other people without their permission for a start. See the disgraceful behaviour of morons and their cameras at the scenes of some of the recent incidents for evidence of that.

Re: Social media madness

And yet Social Media can be a very useful tool to allow people to show what they want to bring to public notice that which TPTB don't want underlined. It's no wonder the extreme right and left would want to ban it and the use of camera phones.

I dare say they thought they'd get more views if the risk was unknown but it has to be said that these people are complete idiots.

Fooling around with that particular firearm (which has a very specific purpose) is a badge of honour among idiots on social media. Youtube is full of them trying to fire them one-handed O.G. style etc. etc.

The extreme right and left have much in common and restricting people's freedom is a good example.

They did, the artical i read (unfortunatly cant link as it was on a news aggreator so cant remember the actual publisher) the woman says that the victim had been badgering her for a couple of months to preform the stunt, showing her the book he had shot previously with the bullet only penetrating half way. Weather it was from the same gun or she was just saying that as arse covering i dont know.

Re: Social media madness

There is no way he fired a desert eagle of that calibre into the same book and it didn't fly through it I don't care what the brainless wife says it's impossible. These people are a reason why things need to change in the U.S.A not restricting guns but making it mandatory to attend a firearms course before your able to purchase. The facilities exist in most small and upwards sized towns for it to be done and the cost need not be very high but it would severely limit this sort of thing.

What i have found mildly comforting is the response from the firearm community in america which is universally condemning these idiots and telling people to learn how to be safe with firearms some even giving specific courses to attend and that safety should always be the first aspect of firearms use.

Social media is perfectly fine when used in the right manner by those using it as the vast majority use it in the right way but sadly we always have a minority of nutters and idiots who want to spoil things for the majority whether its on social media or anywhere else.
