Indeed but l remember the same remark made regarding Olympic athletes but in actual percentage terms l would say its less than 1% who would be taking steroids or other drugs in the Olympics but of course as we know some of the public believe everything they read sadly thus we then get a distorted perception of actual reality.

Re: World of Sport returns

I thought one of the big differences between this and WWE was the size of the guys. Do they have "proper" jobs as well, as it didn't look like they put in the hours at the gym that the WWE guys did, or take performance enhancing substances that may be used elsewhere?

The film The Wrestler is very good, and shows the problem of using steroids, then getting injured, so needing to take painkillers to be able to work etc, and there have been many sad stories of wrestlers over the years.

Some of the famous US stars from years gone by have admitted they used to do steroids, as back then it was "normal", there was pressure to look big, perform well, and "everyone else" was doing it so you "had to" if you wanted to work .

There are quite a few big guys in the UK wrestling scene but the problem is when they get 'good' the scouts from America, Mexico, Japan etc come calling. The money and opportunities they offer are hard to turn down.

A lot of the guys have 'real' jobs but some do make a living from it as long as they're prepared to travel a lot and work 4 or 5 different shows a week. On a lesser scale during the summer I refereed a show in the afternoons at a holiday camp then ring announced at various venues in the evenings for just over 2 weeks flat.

Being Hollywood it there were a lot of exaggerations but the drug use and breakdown in relationships he went through are fairly common at higher levels.

Less than 1% getting caught maybe, so unless they're catching everyone it's a great deal higher, in fact some like know cheat dawain chambers dealer say it's a distorted perception to think it's so low and the reality is around 60%, I personally don't think it that high but what do I know?

The problems in wrestling came home to roost a decade ago when it's top stars started dropping dead young and came to a head when one murdered his wife and son, that said steroids and painkillers were never that much of an issue unless you really were a top pro anyway
