Ah, I have young friends who live in that area now, I bet it will have changed a fair bit since you lived there.

Moss Side/Rusholme used to be my assigned area when I was a young DHSS Inspector. Had a few hairy moments in the 1970s out visiting on my own all hours of the day and evening around there. I blame my streak of white hair on that period.

Re: Allotments

Well just been up there checking over stuff, raspberries, blackberries we put in late last year and the loganberries seem deceased, normally they'd cope quite well but the winter was severe and long Put in 5*raspberry canes, 3*redcurrant, 2*blackberry, 2*gooseberries and 3 each of red and green grapes. Planted 10 rocket (1st early new) and 22 Pentland Javelin (1st early) potatoes, still gotta dig over the bed for the 2nd earlies (international kidney (aka Jersey royals) and maincrop (Maris Piper). Strawberries, black/red currants, beans, onions, garlic, shallots and rhubarb all survived the winter well. As it's at the top of the cilterns it was a nice 2 mile walk back down to the village with the doggies .. Now I'm aching, sore and enjoying a nice cup of tea before I do a nice new potatoes, carrots with tuna omelette with a drizzle of bernaise sauce

Re: Allotments

Loganberries (and raspberries) have a habit of seeming dead then bursting into life from the ground... often well away from where the mother plant is! Don't dig around them for a few more weeks... the roots run close to the surface and may well be alive.

Re: Allotments

We've not put in our blueberry plants yet or our cranberry, as both need acidic soil we thought we'd dig in some fresh horse manure and leave it a few weeks to lower the PH level

Just be thankful you don't have a couple of white GSD's that like to pick the pots up and spread the contents all over the lawn

Re: Allotments

lol, well i dont think they would get to the allotment if i did have some, im going to be fencing ours off this summer, my stepson wants a dog, and so do i, but my fiance said "NO CHANCE, Not with 2 cats, 3 hampsters and 2 Newts"

Ive managed to persuade her into letting us get one this christmas though, so fencing the allotment off is paramount

I've killed many blueberry plants...

a/. by not using acidic soil
b/. by using normal fertilizer
c/. by watering with mains water and not rainwater

I think I've learned my lesson now though!

I wish vendors would mark them as a acid-loving plants on the packs!!!

Re: Allotments

You can buy the Acidic grow bags, dont know if they are any good, but you can still get fertilizer to add to the soil to make the soil more acidic, again, I dont know if thats any good as ive never done it, obviously you have taf lol

luckily we live near a farm so i might ask them if i could pinch some manure, if not ill have to pee in the pots, you cant get much more acidic than that, that was a joke by the way, theres no way im peeing on my blueberries

Re: Allotments

If anyone's considering growing tomatoes I can thoroughly recommend these:

Tomato Harzfeuer F1 which are available from Lidl at just 49p. I've tried many varieties over the years and these are without doubt the best tomatoes I've ever grown - heavy cropping, strong flavour, sweet taste, good size and easy to look after. Highly recommended!!

Re: Allotments

Just been at my allotment today (yay).

I have been sharing it with a friend of my relative and between us we have the polly tunnel up (few rips because of the foxes chasing birds), few raised garden beds with garlic in and last years strawberrys.

Today we started off the peppers & tomatos in the polly tunnel and broadbeans and potatos outside near the garlic patch.

Having no luck at all with herbs though

Re: Allotments

Aromatics? Annuals? Or perennials? Many need really sharp drainage... lots of grit!
