BT to embrace IPTV as it upgrades broadband network to multicast

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05...twork_upgrade/

I think this has been posted before however I'm interested to know from the tech heads on here if it's as good as it sounds.

My questions are as follows

1. Would BT Vision theoretically be able to launch a considerable amount of HD channels using this.
2. Could this be the injection BT Vision needs ?

What they need to do is use Windows 7 Embedded and Windows Media Center for their DVRs. They already use Mediaroom so it can't be that hard for them to make the change.

1) In theory yes, but it's still constrained by the speed of the consumers connections.
Many won't sync high enough to get a decent HD stream.
2) Maybe. It depends if they launch more channels due to it, but the last mile is still their main constraint. Sure multicast lets then offer a huge amount of channels, but their consumers generally don't have the bandwidth to allow multiroom streaming.

Do you think this will become less of an Issue as more and more exchanges get upgraded to fibre.
