FCC plans total repeal of net neutrality rules

https://www.politico.com/story/2017/...eal-fcc-251824

Quote:
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai will reveal plans to his fellow commissioners on Tuesday to fully dismantle the agency's Obama-era net neutrality regulations, people familiar with the plans said, in a major victory for the telecom industry in the long-running policy debate.

Re: FCC plans total repeal of net neutrality rules

Is this my understanding of it that companies like VM would be able to charge to view the likes of youtube on it's services?

Sounds a bit like NK and China you only see what they want you to see

Re: FCC plans total repeal of net neutrality rules

Yes, ultimately, the combination of talk of "fake news" doing the rounds, along with ISPs seeking to maximise revenue, only certain branded "trusted" services will be available - as packages - and everything else will be either expensive or gone. It will happen because, financially, that's how humans behave - and it is logical that the right people will end up getting paid by the right other people to make sure that happens in line with their interests. The government will go along with it due to the "revolving door" effect.

The repel of Net neutrality is simply an opportunity for providers to make money, a bit like the express lanes for security at the Airports

Just because the USA wants to change the way the internet is used and paid for how does this affect the rest of the world? The internet does not belong to the USA.

They don't, but in a capitalist world, their move on such things can cause other nations to follow suit. When other large corporations across the world see that this is possible, they may well try to force it themselves. 'Slippery Slope' would be a good term for how it could end up. Not saying that it definitely will, but it gives people ideas...

And it totally goes against the idea, concept and fundamental design of the internet.

It's worse than that for the septics too, they don't have anything like the choice of provider we do, it's typically only 2 or even 1 in a given area - nightmarish.

I agree, but concept and fundamental design will not be allowed to get in the way of a quick buck.

I wish Google would respect net neutrality. Every time they do an update, they seem to switch my opting out of ads, tracking etc. back in....
