Re: BBC Bake off thread

And Sky being their usual greedy grubby self near enough wanted double the price for it to stay on the BBC but alas its now going to be watched by probably one third of the audience who watched it before on the BBC plus there are now adverts as well.

Re: The Great British Bake Off

It's Mel and Sue's slightly smutty commentary that has made it so popular. It won't get nearly as many viewers on C4 without them.

The appeal is in the eating of the cakes, especially if they are given drowning lessons in pouring cream.

I love baking!!!... but what do we learn about baking from this show? It doesn't teach how to do it and like you, watching a show watching other people bake is not entertainment in my book. Just sheer boredom.

The only reason it probably gets so many viewers, is, this show is as close to baking as most people will get these days, which is a great shame.

A lot of tv shows, British shows, are just nothingness reality junk. It all started with those BBC shows about the cruise ship, learning to drive and I forget the other one, in the 90's. First it was three, then five, then ten and now reality dominates our tv. At least celebrity chef shows are on the decline a bit.

Thank god for netflix and amazon.

I can't stand them. Zero talent, zero charisma.

Well depends on your perspective - for me I'd think showing where you can go wrong can be more useful than someone showing it going right.

And as the BBC currently also publish some of the recipes online http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/programmes/b013pqnm , then people can then attempt something they've seen and liked on the show, with knowledge of what to avoid (such as don't open the lid when doing dampfnudeln)

And then there is also the GBBO Masterclass series which is where Paul and Mary then do more of a 'classic' cookery programme to show how to make them right first time. I have no idea if Channel 4 would continue with that.

Re: The Great British Bake Off

good. Lets put things in perspective now and look at it from another point of view. IIRC when Enterprise was on they had a chat about production quality and budgets and I am sure they said each season cost $10 million (and they are spending 25 million on TBBO). Even if it is $1 million per episode surely the world would be a better place if we didn't watch people make cakes and they made a quality new scifi series instead. They would easily get their money back as well because they would be able to distribute amongst sister networks around the world. Look how successful BSG was and that was a collaboration between Syfy and Sky.

Re: The Great British Bake Off

You're confusing the cost to make the programme and how much they paid for the rights to make the programme - two separate things.

I would be stunned if GBBO cost £1 million per episode, as one of the attractions of 'reality' shows (to the programme makers) is how much cheaper they are to make than drama/comedy/etc. scripted shows.

GoT is exceptional in its cost per episode, and should not be used as a baseline.... ;-)

GBBO may cost as much as £500k per edition to make.

Re: The Great British Bake Off

Never watched so don't care.

But from a business point of view, who the hell in C4 did the deal? And why didn't they confirm that the existing team were part of the package?

Idiots.

I predict it crashes burns and limps towards 2 or 3 seasons at best.
