Car Tax Losses

Quote:
The number of unlicensed vehicles on the road has tripled since the paper tax disc was abolished, government figures show.

The data, published every two years, shows that the government potentially lost out on £107m from 755,000 unlicensed vehicles last year.

The measure was meant to have saved the Treasury £10m.

Figures from the Department for Transport show that 1.8% of vehicles were unlicensed in 2017 compared with 0.6% on 2013.

Re: Car Tax Losses

They still send you reminders, you would have to quite disorganised to forget when you need to tax the car.

Re: Car Tax Losses

you get a V11 reminder form at the beginning of the month of expiry it's hard to forget

but if you never pass an anpr camera your not going to be on the radar until a manual street search is undertaken so i would imagine that's why people risk it .

given the £572 i have paid this year i can understand why people don't pay

not really i only travel about 20 miles per week on average ,this tax regime does not take into account miles traveled just because the car has a large engine does not mean it's causing more pollution than a smaller engined car over the course of a year .

Correct and not exactly rocket science is it. You're responsible for far less noxious gas than many a self righteous eco-car driver.

Not the eco-drivers who drive the same amount.

Re: Car Tax Losses

That's why it really aught to be a surcharge on fuel. If you drive a gas guzzler like petrol's going out of fashion then you'll pay for it. Low mileage in a frugal car and you're quids in. Can't be evaded either unless you're running on moonshine.

There already is a surcharge - fuel duty, 58p a litre, plus 20% vat, i.e most of the what you pay goes to the Govt.

Never mind maybe you'll find it next time

There is an argument taxes aren't high enough. Given the congested roads, multiple car households, and unnecessary short journeys. The tax should of course been invested in and subsidised public transport, which successive govts. have failed to do, despite promises.

No doubt some folks rather like displaying their eco credentials when in fact they drive everywhere producing all sorts of emissions. It's a bit like those rich celebs who make themselves feel better about the carbon emissions from their supercars, boats and planes that they buy a Prius to use for the PR value.
