A changing of the tides remains open to question as lets see what the next couple of years bring before forming strong conclusions.

It's going to be interesting, looks like BT are going to get all the European rugby (with some FTA on ITV) and they are going in strong for EFL and cricket.

However even all this is probably a fraction of the cost compared to what they pay for the 42 PL games.

They could increase content without a major increase in cost. Drop the midweek PL pack in the next tender to cover the cost and perhaps save more by taking the weakest of the main weekend packs. It would still give them 28/30 PL games which is more than ESPN had in their last couple of seasons.

F1 owners say UK paywall TV deal they have inherited is detrimental to sport.

Formula One’s new owners believe the UK television rights deal they have inherited from the previous management, led by Bernie Ecclestone, is detrimental to the sport – with coverage entirely behind a paywall from 2019 to 2024

So much for the prediction that sports rights would fall and not rise...

I think it depends on the sport in question and the current valuation for rights.

European rugby for example is reportedly seen a 25% dip in value in the UK while seeing an increase overseas.

I'd say Cricket and EFL are currently undervalued in terms of the market so bound to see an increase.

The PL rights is going to be the real acid test. I think overall this will increase but in terms of price per match start to level off if just between BT and Sky.

It's only a matter of time now before the global players make a pitch for the PL. The next round of bidding will be very interesting.

Well, the likes of Netflix and Amazon have been reported as becoming more interested in sport in recent times. I don't think you can just ignore that.

Personally l think their so called rumoured potential influence on the forthcoming Premier league rights has been greatly exaggerated.

I would not rule out beIN Sports entering the next bidding process. They are looking at entering the UK market.

Not a cat in hells chance in my opinion and simply not worth it for them.

On what basis do you say that, Den? Seems like a no brainer to me for global players like these, with their nice deep pockets. This would certainly take a fair few subscribers from Sky - a good number of them only subscribe to Sky for the sport.

You may be right about BeIN Sports. They have enough problems to contend with at the moment, with their neighbours cutting up rough and banning their channels.

BeIN might not even have a viable business by then.

I think the one to watch is Liberty Global/Discovery.

I think Amazon will wait this one out and wait to see how they get on with their new NFL rights first.

Talk is cheap as are unsubstantiated rumours and at the end of the day that is all it is and that is all it will remain..
