Re: Missiles stationed on residential roof for Olympics

I heard 2 systems mentioned on the news this morning, one being Rapier and the other Starstreak.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapier_(missile)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starstreak_(missile)

Also found this with some info on possible installations:

No, they seem to be much bigger than that, as shown on BBC news this morning.

Take a look a the Starstreak installation image shown towards the bottom of the Wikepedia article. Not shoulder launched but not huge either.

From the Army website - Starstreak
Quote:
The missile, which travels at more than three times the speed of sound, uses a system of three dart-like projectiles, allowing multiple hits on the target. HVM can be fired from the shoulder, from a lightweight multiple launcher or from the Stormer armoured vehicle.

Re: Missiles stationed on residential roof for Olympics

OK so the Olympics are high profile. But with all the security stuff that seems to be heading towards the verge of paranoia, surely any sensible terrorist (or is that a contradiction), is just going to say, too hard, and choose something a little less profile but which still has all the TV cameras, etc so they'd get their around the world headlines?

It is yes, and I don't really blame the authorities because if they miss something and anything happens can you imagine the outcry? Everyone would be asking why they didn't take it more seriously, how they could have got it so wrong etc. etc. etc.

As I pointed out with respect to the Tottenham Court Road hostage taker a couple of days ago, they now err very much on the side of caution and consequently, it doesn't take very much to bring London to a halt and generate massive news coverage.

Terrorists love high profile targets, because it gets them more press coverage.

Re: Missiles stationed on residential roof for Olympics

Very reassuring to know that if there are any terrorist planes either wanting to fire missiles or crash land into the Olympics. then they are ready for them.

I'm still not going. I don't care how low the threat is.

We are, after all, the only country whose military placed a nuclear reactor in it's capital. Admittedly, it was only small, but the damage could have been siginificant to the capital if something had gone wong.

I would rather have AA missiles on my roof than a nuclear reactor on my doorstep.

Yes pretty bad whatever they do but probably not as bad as a plane crashing into a full Olympic stadium.

Anyway let's not forget that a large part of the reason all this is in the news is to try to disuade 'amateur' terrorists from trying something during the big event and reassure the public that something's being done...

Where are terrorists going to get hold of drones? Quite difficult to steal I would have thought

Risk vs reward (damage limitation).

Shoot down a plane, collateral damage 10s-100s of people from debris; plane gets through, thousands potentially killed - the risk doesn't go away just because it is unpalatable.

Real-life example - when in the RAF, the final test for biological/chemical attack was the junior member of the team took their mask off before everyone else; let me tell you, it was a great day when someone new joined the team.
