lost ip address

Hi,

My desktop has cloned my linksys ip address. The lynksys wireless was plugged in for about 2 mins and is currently not connected. I have tried ipconfig /release and /renew but it says "the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation".

I know the modem works as its currently plugged in to a laptop with no issues.

Is there any way of giving my deskop a new ip?

Thanks

Your desktop has a static ip, you need to change this to obtain auto or using dhcp.

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections or Network and Internet then Network Connections.
You'll see your local area connection
Right click on it, select Properties, In the list highlight Internet Protocol then select Properties.
In the window that opens Select Obtain IP Address automatically. Ok or close back to Network Connections.

Re: lost ip address

Do a factory reset on the Linksys router (follow the instructions at http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-a-Linksys-Router )

Re: lost ip address

OK here goes, Wife removed my modem for my pc. put it on another in the house (worked fine), power went out and back on in this time. My pc was still hooked to my d-link router when power went out. Now my IP address is gone, seems to have copied the dlink or some other ip starting with 169.

I have tried everything to fix, even restored pc to factory default just like it was new out of the box. Still nothing, can someone help. I dont want to pay someone 200 dollars to fix something that I could do.. Ive done it all uninstalled everything and such

I use vista

Re: lost ip address

Turn the modem and router off, turn the modem on first, give it a minute or two, power up the router.
If you still get a 169, can you release and renew?
CMD: ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew

Re: lost ip address

FW is off, and error says, An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection: Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

Re: lost ip address

Typical error, though its more difficult since your going wireless. Adopter unable to communicate with the router. Which firewall do you have?

Re: lost ip address

this is happening on my desktop, i had a wireless router for my lap top. But it is no longer conneted. After this happened I restored my desktop to factory settings so it like it is brand new. FW im using is norton and the windows vitsa FW. all it tells me is ethier local connet or keeps trying to identify the network. Did the IPconfig release/ renew no luck. Any pointers?
