Live Premiership Football via Foreign Channels

I was thinking about this while on holiday. Just been away to Lanzarote, for a cultural break

Over there at 3 PM on Saturday they show loads of prem football via foreign sat channels i.e Canal Plus in France and some Asia channels as well so you can see the matches live as they happen. I've also seen this done in a few pubs in the UK as well. I know Sky or the BBC can't show a match live beteen 2:30 and 5:00 on a Saturday.

Why don't NTL offer these channels to us so we can still watch Prem football as it happens ?

Re: Live Premiership Football via Foreign Channels

If it's not legal for Sky or the BBC to show it, doesn't that give you a clue that *no* channels are allowed to show these matches in the UK?

And yes, it does take the **** that we get to see fewer live Premiership matches than people in Spain. But blame the Premier League for that...

Re: Live Premiership Football via Foreign Channels

i think it's not legal for the UK stations to broadcast these but i don't think it's illegal for a TV company to show a foreign feed.. plenty of pubs already do this to still show matches so it can't be illegal and if NTL could offer canel plus they would have no control over the content they showed so if a match was on at 3 it wouldn't be NTL's fault

It is illegal and plenty of pubs have been fined for it. Oh and C+ also show hardcore porn too which also would be illegal.

Thinking back I seem to recall - the reason why Channels over here are not allowed to show games at 3pm on a Saturday is because it could affect attendences at the smaller league grounds.........and of course we all know how considerate the big clubs are of the Cambridge United's of the world......

Re: Live Premiership Football via Foreign Channels

yeah that's the reason behind it.. it's just a shame that in today's technalogical age NTL can't show the feeds from the Asain and French channels.. etc.. would be a good way for NTL to do something Sky couldn't but as has been pointed out it would still be illegal although you could argue this the same way newsgroups are allowed through NTL in that they can't control the content.

Re: Live Premiership Football via Foreign Channels

I watched the Liverpool vs Juventus game online the other night using a program called Coolstreaming. Not the best quality like, and the commentary was Chinese, but it was better than listening to it on Radio 5 (I dont have Sky Sports by the way...)

I do know that they broadcast quite a few of the 3pm kick-off games for the Premiership though...

I think Mr Murdoch might have something to say to Mr Branson if ever that did happen, as undoubtedly sky would lose revenue.........(shame)

"Richmond" above gave you the links... Most Hong Kong stations have English commentators (ESPN Hong Kong) but the match analysis is in Chinese... The matches are almost live, you can have as much as 4-5 minutes delay...
