Now a group called PSJailbreak says it will release a USB dongle containing software that allows users to save games to the console's hard drive.

However, a distributor for the dongle said that he had tested it and would start selling the device "in the next two weeks".

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers
Probably just a little too late. I'd imagine that the recent judgement against R4 cards for use with nintendo ds would also cover these dongles.
As I understand it, it's no longer legal to advertise these in this country. I'm sure the hackers will try to get round it but Sony are usually pretty quick to react.

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers
I was under the impression that you could already save games to the hard drive, just like the 360, or am I missing something here?

Save complete (copied) game to the hard drive - not saved games.

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers
at the moment its only possible to save partial game data or game saves on the HD , but this could change that, so full games could be dumped straight on the HD

The mod actually comes on a USB stick, which, if inserted into the PS3 before the console is turned on, will disable system security, and allow users to backup games on the hard drive, or run third-party software.

It's been claimed a couple times now but this is looking the most legit so far. Seen a couple videos of it supposedly working but I'll wait for more evidence before am convinced.

Almost 4 years now. Japan and America got it in November 2006. We got it March 2007. It looks like they've somehow got hold of the software/hardware Sony engineers would use to repair PS3's. It basically bypasses all the PS3 security and puts the PS3 into a debug mode kind of.

Sony obtains Australia ban on PS3 hack chip
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11116416
Quote:
The ban prevents OzModChips, Mod Supplier and Quantronics from importing, distributing or selling the device.
Sony has until August 31 to makes its case to the court for a permanent ban.
If it fails, the chips could go on sale on 1 September.
The firm declined to comment on the proceedings. The Australian distributors could not be reached.

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers
There's already 3 or 4 legit clones getting ready from what I've read. Some possibly ready by the end of next week unless Sony get to them to.

I can see that if they don't get permission to sell then the software will mysteriously appear on the internet

The court ruled on Friday that a ban on distribution of the PSJailbreak "dongle", first issued on 27 August, would be made permanent.
However, on Thursday the software code behind the hack was released on the internet as "open-source".

Quote:
However, the court's action was pre-empted when another group of hackers decided to develop and release PSGroove, the code behind the hack, on the internet.
Mathieu Hervais told BBC News he was one of about 20 hackers involved in PSGroove's development.
"We want people to run the software they like on the system they paid for without it having to be licensed by Sony," he said.
