Hotmail,Outlook

Hi,
A few days ago my desktop email client couldn't send emails through my Hotmail account.
As I couldn't resolve this I set up a new Outlook(as Hotmail seems to be known now) account.
I can't send emails through this account either although I can receive emails in both accounts, If I log in online I can send emails.

I'm using the email settings as shown in Hotmail/Outlook.
My Virginmedia email sends emails ok.

any ideas

Re: Hotmail,Outlook

What do you mean by "cannot send".

What happens (or doesnt happen).
Do you get errors, if so, what are they ?

Re: Hotmail,Outlook

It shows this error
============================================
Failed to connect to the outgoing server. smtp.live.com

Details
Socket error-2146885628, port 25, protocol:smtp:
cannot find object or property
============================================

The email client is Incredimail

I've tried port 587 and smtp-mail.outlook.com
SSL is enabled
When I log in to outlook or my old Hotmail account there is a beta version available to test
I'm being to think I'm affected by some change Microsoft have made.

Re: Hotmail,Outlook

Try using port 465 for the smtp server. This is the SSL port that was enabled some time ago to allow access to the server from outside VM's network with authentication.

It's possible that port 25 access has now been closed.

Re: Hotmail,Outlook

I tried that and it said server doesn't respond.
The new email account I set up in outlook is imap, so it can't send with imap or pop.

The pop uses smtp.live.com, port 25 or 587
The imap uses smtp-mail.outlook.com, port 587

I've mixed port numbers and smtp addresses around but no good.

Re: Hotmail,Outlook

I found the answer.
Evidently Microsoft altered the following in August 2017,

Outlook.com no longer supports AUTH PLAIN authentication

It seems my version of Incredimail(2008) was to old.
I updated to a newer version and my Hotmail and Outlook accounts are now working ok.
