Re: Single thread/stream download problems

Yup same here but on a cisco unit. Post here on virgin media forums https://community.virginmedia.com/t5...026879/page/13
If enough people post they may look at this again. Many won't notice though sadly but a problem more widespread than we realize.
I suspect the perfect test is because virgin haven't updated the settings locally to limit the single thread download.
It even worse for those on heavily congested areas where speeds of 4meg get halved as well.

Re: Single thread/stream download problems

Just tested mine, I got 125M on the single thread, 194M overall, bursting to 200M.

Re: Single thread/stream download problems

Cisco MAC address here. 200Mb Gamer.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedt...21268843598455

104Mbps single thread, 207.5Mb multi-threaded.

However I do wonder if these results are a symptom of TBB's own servers, rather than our connections. For example I can download the following file at 207Mbps with a single thread:

http://caesar.acc.umu.se/debian-cd/8...amd64-CD-1.iso

Re: Single thread/stream download problems

A handful of websites aren't affected by the problem, I can download videos from www.twit.tv at full speed but most other websites are severely impacted.

The single-thread speeds on Cisco units seem to be a lot more consistent than the Motorola systems, which during downloads jump around from under 10Mb to over 100Mb, but average about 40Mb.

So on the 6x HTTP test I get 220 megabits per second, when downloading that ISO I get only 20. On the single thread TBB test today I get about 70.

I tried speaking with Virgin support and they didn't know what I was on about. Just pointed me to the Speedtest.net test

Re: Single thread/stream download problems

Thanks for running some tests guys. It shows it doesn't affect the whole network and varies greatly in severity. I'd sure like to know why!

It's possible in some cases but it definitely wasn't for me. TBB is a handy way of testing for it but I didn't just rely on one test because of the reason you suggested, and I encourage others to do the same just to be thorough. For me, that single-thread speed reported by TBB was reflective of download performance in general and matched the sort of speed I got with normal file downloads but with a couple of exceptions.

Also, TBB's test seems to work reliably for other ISPs with single and x6 lines usually matching. But that in itself wouldn't rule out e.g. a peering congestion issue between TBB and VM which is why I still suggest checking with other downloads.

Like cje85, twit.tv's videos which are served by the cachefly CDN were weirdly unaffected most of the time. Virtualbox's CDN was OK, but not quite as good. They're about the only two I found that performed anywhere close to acceptably. Both of these CDNs avoid routing through London peering points for me which is about the only common link I could find between them, but then other downloads avoiding London were affected.

Yep, sounds about right unfortunately, hence my reasoning behind creating this thread. Although after some perseverance we've managed to get the problem acknowledged by some forum staff, that's as far as it's ever progressed and the mods visiting the thread seem to stop replying after a while until another mod picks it up and replies occasionally. It has been escalated to Networks as a fault, and dismissed with an explanation along the lines of 'single thread has always been poor'. Well, it hasn't because I wouldn't have been with Telewest/VM for ~10 years if that was the case! And as others have show, it's certainly not the case across the whole network.

Thinkbroadband have picked up on this: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/7...dentified.html

We have no idea if this [SuperHub 3 issue] is linked to the general single download performance issues our speed test results are showing, which appear to be getting worse

Re: Single thread/stream download problems

 You know when you don't sign into a forum for a few years and forget you had an account and make another one... OK just me then?

Well, long story short, I'm watercooled too (a mod could check this by IP address of last sign-in if they wish). I completely forgot I made an account in that name but as I use that name on a couple of other forums I must have accidentally typed it in and let the password manager do the rest...

Sorry about that.

@mike86: As far as I can tell this is a separate issue to the Superhub 3 bug. The download speed problem affects me and others on the Superhub 2/AC.

Re: Single thread/stream download problems

Yeah it's a separate issue. I'm just pointing out that Thinkbroadband have noticed the worsening single thread results.

Re: Single thread/stream download problems

Apparently my connection is due to be moved to a new Cisco CBR8 CMTS any day now. It will be interesting to see if that helps. The few who have reported problems on Cisco CMTS seem to get much better single thread speeds, so it might reduce the problem if not resolve it.

Re: Single thread/stream download problems

It's not great but i'd take that over my current single-thread speeds.

A weak signal on my phone beats that!

@Martin D: Any idea if yours is a recent upgrade or have you been on that CMTS for a while?
