ntl to breathe email problem ....

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting ntl to send email using a breathe account.
I also have a 'Freeserve' account (now Wannabe) and that has been
sending and recieving using a breathe account with no problems,
and is still doing so.
My ntl account is using 'Safe-Mail.net' with no problems, but breathe
seems to be un-reachable ...

Has anyone any idea what i could try to get ntl to work with breathe ?

Regards, John

Re: ntl to breathe email problem ....

'mail.breathe.com' appears to be the pop3 server (for i/c mail). I would expect the setting for outgoing mail to be 'smtp.breathe.com' [which does exist].

However - if you connecting from the NTL network then the chances are it will probably fail as [like most ISP's] Tiscali will restrict access from IP addresses not on their network.

You could just use 'smtp.ntlworld.com' for the outgoing mail.

Re: ntl to breathe email problem ....

Hi Pem,

well, i'm sort of in the middle of changing from a
freeserve dial-up telephone connection via modem,
to
an ntl cable connection using a broadband 'cable modem'
and i can still use the telephone modem, if i wish.

If i access my e-mail through freeserve(wannabe) using
the dial-up freeserve account, then Outlook Express is
happy to recieve or send from any of the five accounts
once every ten minutes.

So i am pretty sure the settings for the POP3 incoming
and outgoing for all five are correct, except for one,
Dialstart. They have stopped their POP3 interaction.
And yet curiously, i can still send using Dialstart,
but Outlook Express cannot collect mail from them.
I have simply removed Dialstart from 'Recieve' but i
have left it in 'Send'

So if i read you right,
ntl wont interact with Breathe ??
Whats that got to do with Tiscali ?
...Tiscali will restrict access from IP addresses
not on their network
...
Do ntl use some Tiscali network hardware maybe ?
Or does Breathe have to go through Tiscali to get to
ntl ... ?

Whatever the reason,
i take it that i can't configure ntl to interact with
Breathe, would that be right ?
Except, of course, by personally accessing Breathe.com
and manually checking and sending mail.
Which is what i have been doing.

The Breathe address is not mine, it is a friend's who
is not happy about this situation.

Is there any way to configure it ?
Does 'Outlook' operate differently to Outlook Express ?
I might look into a 'script' just for Breathe ....

Curious, and a bit miffed, John

Re: ntl to breathe email problem ....

I think you will find that Freeserve sends all mail via smtp.freeserve.co.uk by diverting all traffic on Port 25, so it is bypassing what you have set in Outlook Express. NTL do not do such a divert, so just specify smtp.ntlworld.com for outgoing mail, ntl let you use any From: email address.

Re: ntl to breathe email problem ....

Hi Pem, Hi mmm,

Thank you very much for that very simple workaround !!

I did exactly as you said, and now it looks like my
Outlook Express will send and recieve from all of its
accounts, via ntl.

Heres a couple of pics, just in case anyone else wants
to see where to go.

I havent checked using the dial-up to freeserve yet,
i am guessing that will be ok with this alteration,
let you know later.

Very happy, cheers, John

No problem.

To answer your other question - breathe uses Tiscali mail servers.

Re: ntl to breathe email problem ....

To John1

I expect you want to keep Freeserve PAYG dialup as backup?

You'l be pleased to hear I have kept my Freeserve email address without dialing in for the last 3 years, just 'reactivate suspended account' from the Freeserve homepage every 3 months (from ntl BB) ...

Re: ntl to breathe email problem ....

Hi,

I didn't know that freeserve did a 'Pay As You Go'
the one i have is a legacy from when freeserve was
free.
You had to pay BT to use freeserve at @ £6 p.mth,
then about a year or so ago freeserve decided to
charge at about £6 p.mth. through BT. So the levy
went up to over £12 per month, thats just over £37
per quarterly bill - and thats for 'out of hours'
access.

So the ntl minimum broadband always on started to
look better and better.

No i wont be keeping up the freeserve account, if i
am happy with the ntl arrangements, and as the e-mail
seems to be working ok now, its looking good.

Cheers John
