Phone lines upstairs

I've lived with this issue for a few years now, and probably had the opportunity to bring it up with Virgin and their technicians, but i never did.

Basically we have a phone downstairs which works fine, but for some reason none of the upstairs phones (or the phonelines?) actually work. There is absolutely no tone coming through the phones.

We have 3 bedrooms upstairs and each of the sockets don't work, though i remember they worked, but then after i took over the account from my dad shortly after they stopped working completely. I've tried different phones but none seem to be working.

Finally another quick enquiry i noticed in an earlier thread, due to moving the computer upstairs many years ago into a bedroom, the Virgin technicians had to bring the coax cable around the house, quite large coax in fairness due to the extention that was completed.

Anyhoo, i'm thinking of moving the computer into one of the other bedrooms now due to space issues, but the one thing that was halting this move was the fact that this coax cable is coming around the house. The bedroom i want it to go into coincidentally is right above where the Virgin box is, so it would require a significantly smaller amount of cabling.

But at the same time, i now have the Superhub (Which at the moment is wired to my PC) so i do have the option of going wireless and leaving it in the old bedroom, though that doesn't help the fact that i will have an 8ft cable running through the bedroom leading to a single modem.

Virgin only look after the master socket, the extensions are your property and you would have to pay £99 to get them activated.

Do you know, or can you see how the wires route from socket to socket upstairs and from downstairs?

Just relised (After i didn't know) that the socket issue shouldn't be a problem. We've been living in the darkages for a long time and not really bothered using cordless phones before since i thought you needed them connected upstairs as well.

But after i found that isn't the case i have just ordered a couple, so that's fine.

Only other thing is just the coax cable leading around the house, but i guess there is a cost incurred for moving it or reducing it.

Cordless phones are the way forward, no wires and you can move them whenever you like

The modem, being as you've got the option to go wireless, do that and see if your connection is ok, being as it's not far from the hub i'd imagine it will be.

As for the cable already connected to the modem, i would suggest you coil it up and leave it as is. If there is some furniture you can pop the coil behind, problem solved

The other alternative for your internal cable to the modem is, take a trip to ebay and get yourself a shorter premade length with connectors and just swap this over with whats already in place. If you aren't up for that then just coil up the existing cable to be on the safe side.

VM will remove or re-route the cable on the outside of the property if you want them to, but there will be a callout charge for this.

Your cheapest option would be get a wireless n dongle for your pc and coil up the modem cable upstrais, total cost £20 or so

Y dont u get a house Phone set like this


I got the extact same phone set in the picture above from a Car boot sale few years ago for a bout £8 .

So Basically the main headset u will plug in the main virgin media phone socket
The other headsets u will plug in in where ever u want
