best Cable Modem and Router - Business Class?

We have virgin 20MB at work, with the free cable modem that comes with it.

can anyone help with sourcing the best :

a. best business class cable broadband modem - the free one sucks.

b. best business class router (up to 20 users) - used a basic netgear
one but it can't cope.

I'm talking needs to be able to handle up to 20 users, current 10 online constantly.

Err, you can only use the cable modem they supply, regardless of whether it sucks or not.

to the forum, BTW.

Re: best Cable Modem and Router - Business Class?

As Stuart says you cannot change the modem as that is attached to your account, you probably just need a decent router so maybe such a request would be better made in the Networking section which can be found here. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/87/

As for business class routers, well, I can recommend Cisco. Bear in mind you will need to get a seperate switch though.

Even if you could get a better modem (which as Chris points out you can't) it's the router that matters when using multiple users..

For the router avoid ones designed for home usage and go for the business D-links, drayteks, vigors or even Ciscos

Re: best Cable Modem and Router - Business Class?

Hard question to answer, it very much depends on how you want to share the connection and restrict the users..

Re: best Cable Modem and Router - Business Class?

I would ask for an Ambit 250, 255 or 256.

The Netgear VMDG280 they usually give a home user is rubbish. i know that from experience, but alas, i have no idea what they give the buisness consumer.

Re: best Cable Modem and Router - Business Class?

Ive had a bit to drink tonight but I stand by the VMDG280 being a poor quality router/modem

Its implemenation of upnp leaves alot to be desired. i only speak for a home user. a buisness user may benefit from it. i dont know

Re: best Cable Modem and Router - Business Class?

To be honest I would want UPNP enabled on any router never mind one for a business.

One of the fist things that I disable on a new router.
