Modem question
Hi guys,
A friend of mine was talking about putting 2 computers onto virgin cable. He has asked if it would be possible to do the following, his modem has a USB output and a Nic output. Can he connect a computer to each of these. I thought not, but thought I would check with you guys first. I know he can do it with a crossover cable etc, etc. but thought this was an interesting possible solution.

Re: Modem question
The modem will only support a single connection direct to it, i.e. ethernet or USB, not both simultaneously. When swapping over you'd need to disconnect (at the modem) the redundant lead, and repower the modem.
You could use Internet Connection Sharing between the two computers, using the USB (or a second network card) to provide the connection between the main computer and modem. However that needs your main PC to be on whenever the second PC needs to be used for internet.
Most people are finding that, unless the second PC's internet use is infrequent, a router is preferred.

Re: Modem question
Thanks guys, just verified what I thought, so he either needs a router or a crossover cable and respective bits.

Re: Modem question
Router is best option as you don't need to have the other computer switched on to access the net.
You can pick up a wired router for about £30 and a wireless one for around £45.
