Reigning champion Adrian Lewis survived a major scare on the opening night of the 2012 Ladbrokes World Darts Championship.

"I was 2-0 down and was stung by a wasp in the break and that's when I thought it's not my day," said Lewis, who nonetheless insisted he never felt he was going to crash out.

With Lewis clearly struggling for form, Heydon was in no mood to let up and double six took him into a two-set lead.

Lewis hailed his opponent's play, telling Sky Sports: "He had me under the cosh. The way he was finishing in the first two sets was phenomenal."

While Lewis survived, the same could not be said of sixth seed Mark Webster, who crashed out to Richie Burnett.

Afterwards, Burnett said he believes he can still add another world title to his CV.

Earlier in the night, Roland Scholten saw off Jamie Caven 3-1 in the tournament's opening match.

Despite some 'double trouble', Jones beat Scott MacKenzie 3-1 in the day's final match to progress.

Phil Taylor averaged just short of a 100 as he moved into the second round of the Ladbrokes World Championship with a 3-0 victory over Japanese qualifier Haruki Muramatsu.

Wes Newton produced an impressive display to show he will be hard to ignore. The world number five has enjoyed a fine year and he proved too good for Kurt van de Rijck, winning in three straight sets at the Alexandra Palace.

Newton next face Justin Pipe, who overcame a poor start to see off Sean Reed 3-1 in the night's opening encounter.

Co Stompe saw off Michael Smith, also by a 3-0 scoreline.

Ronnie Baxter was a first-round casualty at the PDC World Championship, beaten 3-2 by fellow Englishman Steve Farmer on Saturday afternoon.

Jelle Klaasen had earlier scored his first television victory in 18 attempts with a 3-1 triumph over Peter Wright.

Robert Thornton also booked a place in the last 32 with a 3-1 success over Stoke's Ian White.

Alan Tabern also made it through to the second round with a 3-1 win, but the man from St Helens was given a scare by Christian Perez of the Philippines.

Steve Beaton battled back from the brink of defeat to beat Magnus Caris in an opening-round thriller at the PDC World Championship.

The Swede then began the third set with a 13-darter but couldn't finish the job off, failing with three shots for the match as he seemingly became side-tracked by some heckling from the bumper crowd.

Vincent van der Voort was also pushed hard in his opener on Saturday evening, eventually running out a 3-2 winner against Mark Hylton.

Paul Nicholson found himself in a battle against Mensur Suljovic, the man who knocked out Michael van Gerwen and James Wade last year.

The final first-round match of the night was short but not so sweet for Denis Ovens, as he was forced to pull out of his tie with Kevin Munch due to a back injury.

Yes while Phil will be the greatest darts player there ever was it would be nice if Gary Anderson or James Wade won it for once.

James Richardson caused one of the biggest upsets in the history of the PDC World Championship with a 3-0 victory over Raymond van Barneveld.

A shock never appeared on the cards when Barney - using replicas of the arrows that were in his hands when he defeated Phil Taylor in an epic 2007 final - won the opening leg in just 12 darts, taking out 130.

"Speechless...just speechless," he told Sky Sports afterwards. "I don't know what to say. I believed.

Next up for 'Ruthless' will be Kim Huybrechts, the Belgian having caused a bit of an upset himself with a 3-0 win over Brendan Dolan.

Meanwhile, Dave Chisnall set up a second round clash with Phil Taylor thanks to a routine 3-0 result against Mark Dudbridge.

The final match on Sunday night saw Mark Walsh come from a set down to see off Warren French 3-1.

Andy Hamilton lived dangerously and just missed out on a nine-dart finish before progressing past Spaniard Antonio Alcinas 3-2.

Mervyn King eased into the last 32 by whitewashing the unfortunate Australian Geoff Kime.

World number four Gary Anderson survived a huge scare against unhearladed German Jyhan Artut to progress into the second round of the PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace.

Also on Tuesday night, Dutchman Michael van Gerwen claimed the scalp of 21st seed Colin Osborne with a 3-1 triumph.

In the opening match of the night, former world number one Colin Lloyd saw off American Darin Young 3-1.

Terry Jenkins was a comfortable 3-0 winner over Joe Cullen in the final match of the night.

A limping Simon Whitlock averaged 105 during a 3-0 demolition of Dennis Smith 3-0 in the first round of the PDC World Championship.

"I've got a lot to lose, I'm defending £100,000 (in the rankings) and I want to be in the Premier League.

"I've got a broken leg but not a broken heart - I can still throw darts!"

Former champion John Part was another to impress, racing to a 3-0 win over John Henderson.

Scott Rand whitewashed 20th seed Andy Smith in the first match of the evening.

Devon Petersen came through not one but two nail-biting matches to complete the second round line-up.

Adrian Lewis battled his way past Robert Thornton to book a date with Wayne Jones in the third round of the PDC World Championship.

The defending champion was never behind in the match but had to stay cool under pressure with Thornton giving everything he got, Lewis eventually prevailing 4-2.

Jones eased into the last 16 with a 4-0 thrashing of Roland Scholten, who looked a shadow of his former self as he won just three legs in the match.

In the final match of the evening, Justin Pipe crawled his way into the last 16 with a 4-3 victory over Wes Newton.

Yes Colin you are not the only one as l tend to record the last hour then l watch it in the morning with a nice cup of coffee.

Have not had chance to watch any of it this year due to problems with both our internet and tv (missing most of the sky channels). So I am delighted that I have been able to catch up with this. And I now have the channels back except still keep losing the HD channels every now and again. Engineer booked tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about your problems with your TV and internet and glad that things have improved to some extent and glad this thread has been of some help to people as so far the first round has produced a few shocks with Barney being one of those to go home early.
