Totally agree, the BBC needs a reality check.

I don't want this thread to turn into the validity of the Licence Fee but if the BBC was a private company it would be a lot more streamlined than it is now.

I would rather a hatchet man came in to cut costs, it would mean redundancies, than the output being the first thing to get cut.
It's always the same with councils/public companies, instead of looking at the structure it's the services that get cut.

Someone on DS forum raised an interesting question on this , I wonder if we could see more sporting rights being sold on a Pan European basis.

Liberty Global and Sky have already extended their European footprint and surely there would be more incentive for the likes of Eurosport to take a look being that they have their channel all over Europe.

I understand many people have said it won't happen owing to the rights holders making more money by selling on a country by country basis but it will be interesting development to watch.

Well if a company held the pan european rights and didn't have a local broadcaster in a country and did it themselves then under EU rules i should be able to subscribe to the same service in the cheapest country that offers the same thing? I can't see a company charging, say, Poland the same price that they'd charge here.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part.

There's speculation the BBC could also soon lose the Six Nations Rugby.

These are ominous foreboding times for the BBC and it will get worse.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Just checked the Now TV website and a Sky Sports day pass seems to be £6.99 at the moment. Not sure if that is a temporary price or the new price going forward.

Would this be a feasible alternative to VM Sky Sports sub? I probably only watch 2 or 3 games a month so would be cheaper, just concerned about PQ and high demand games not being watchable.

Has anyone got any experience of this?

Why not try it on this day on the free pass and decide for yourself.

It wouldn't. The independent PwC reports shows it to be very efficient when compared to its peers both in the UK and overseas.
Overheads in charities and public sector: 11.2%
Overheads in regulated private companies: 8.8%
BBC: 7.6%

Meanwhile, seasoned media commentator mlt11 on Digital Spy summarises the forces driving TV sports rights and has predicted that the BBC will show most of the Olympics including the key bits and that a Premier League-owned channel is likely.

Thanks Muppetman, I've just taken a punt on a Now TV box from Amazon, got it on a lightning deal, £13.99 with two SS day passes, offer still available for another hour or so if anyone else is interested

There are many issues with the bbc but it has to be said they got London 2012 spot on. Makes you wonder how they managed to make such a mess of the jubilee or this year's Wimbledon highlights, but that's another story. If we are to have a public service broadcaster funded in this way then it should be the natural home for events such as the Olympics. But the way I read that article suggests that the rights might be sold on to individual broadcasters on a country by country basis, and that the BBC have previously been involved in similar deals - so it isn't necessarily the case that they've "lost" the rights, just that they haven't won them yet.
