Smile Introducing my new dog

Say hello to Milo ,we lost our dog a few weeks ago due to ill health and the opportunity came up to have Milo ,a miniature jack russel 10 month old .He needs training around other animals as we have a cat and 2 rabbits ,so any tips from pet owners will be appreciated as i know that jack russels can be a bit fiery

Re: Introducing my new dog

I can not give you any tips on socialising Milo but I do have to say that he looks a real little charmer. Do you know anything of his history as that may help dealing with any issues?

He was taken as a puppy by a friend of someone i work with but the gentleman in question has developed emphysema so has been advised by his doctor to get rid of any pets as they can irritate the condition further .He is house trained ...almost and answers to his name and being only 10 months old he will be easy to train .My only concern is the breeds natural instinct to chase other small animals .We have a cat that has been around for 10yrs nearly and lived through 3 dogs so once he gets used to the dog i think he will be alright as long as the dog calms down a bit

Re: Introducing my new dog

That sounds as though you are in with a fighting chance at least with the cat who will soon show Milo who is boss. A couple of nose swipes with a sharp claw will soon have Milo leaving a healthy distance between him and the "Boss"

I think your main problem will be Milo's reaction to the rabbits if they are kept as free-run house pets you will have to proceed with a great deal of patience and never leave Milo alone with them.

The only JR I ever had any dealings with was a lunatic. He was "trained" but it only kicked in when he had let off steam which in the main meant that he ran in circles at great speed. OK if he was in a large field but if he was in a room then his run would resemble a "Wall of Death" dash at the height of the back of a couch.

So good luck, I am sure the next few weks will be....errr ...intestesting.

drop me a pm with your address and ill get a copy burnt off for you in the next couple of days

Pepper is a food orientated so training is fairly good. I'd put her on a par with a german sheperd perhaps not quite as clever.

So far she can....

sit,
wait,
heel,
down,
fetch,
leave

well she can when there are treats for her
