The reason is more likely to be the number of VVIP's in the olympic stadium.

You could spoof the GPS signal and borrow one of the US Air Force ones.

http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/...19/irans-drone

Either that or dump some explosives into a remote controlled plane, not the biggest explosion ever but would make some headlines.

Anyway this is a nice diversion from the main counter-terrorism plans I'm sure are already in place.

I think part of the reasoning behind doing all this so publicly is that it does send a message to the terrorists that the olympics are secured.

Because they were only exercises practicing for the 'Big One'.

Oddly, the vast majority did and well before the days of 'health & safety' too. Can you credit it?

Re: Missiles stationed on residential roof for Olympics

About a mile away from the Olympic Stadium area, there is a massive estate called Canary Wharf, it has massive tower office blocks which can quite easily take all this crap.

Why put thousands of residents at risk by placing the missiles and troops there, and now the terrorist know where there are placed, good planning.

I willb glad when the whole thing is over with.

Unless, of course, they don't come in this way.....

Anyway, I think you will find similar initiatives are underway there...

btw, it was the residents who informed the press, so you should save your ire for them.

How were they informed, oh yes by leaflet, very professional and a great way to get the residents onside.

Should they have individually met every one of the hundreds of residents they may possibly be siting the AA on?

Loads of things they could have done, met with the residents association and got them to canvas the residents and address their concerns, in fact anything other than just drop a leaflet of, it's not a bogof offer from Dominos after all.

Re: Missiles stationed on residential roof for Olympics

We all that no matter how they'd have done this Arthur and people like him would've found something complain about.

If it'd all been kept secret until the last minute, people would've complained about a lack of consultation and the bully boy authorities. When they do consult in advance, people take it to the media and then whine about being put at risk. If they'd decided to do nothing and ignore the terrorist risk from the air, people would've been banging on about a glaring hole in Olympic security.

Re: Missiles stationed on residential roof for Olympics

Or banging on about this had they taken the eminently sensible decision to move the misslies from above peoples heads and put them in a wood lived in by no one other than the Corky-Fruited Water Dropwort.

Plans to use surface-to-air missiles to protect the skies over London during the Olympics could be thwarted – because they will disturb the habitat of a rare wild flower.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has ordered batteries of Rapier missiles to be placed in South-East London, ready to deal with any airborne terrorist threat to the Games.

But the move has led to a row with one local MP, who says the missiles risk damaging an area of historic woodland, designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which contains the Corky-Fruited Water Dropwort.

Of course it is. However the terrorists know that you can't make a place 100% secure unless you exclude people and vehicles.

How are they putting 1000's of people at risk??

This isn't conventional war were you destroy air defences first

Re: Missiles stationed on residential roof for Olympics

I would be quite happy for the Ministry of Defence to install a SAM installation on my roof.

Rather on my house than anyone elses.
