BBC Iplayer Fully Supported On PS3

I know there were some people on here who have been waiting for this. Well your wait is finally over as The BBC Iplayer is now fully support's the Playstation 3.

Also the new Firmware update (2.53) is avalible now for your Playstion 3 which supports full screen flash video

Quote:
We've been waiting for native iPlayer support on our PS3 since a cunning coder created their own workaround site back in April. Finally our wait is over and PS3 everywhere (well, in the UK at least) can enjoy the BBC's latest offerings through their PS3s. Simply head on over to the official website and you will be shown the new, specially made PS3 version (also accessible from your PC, if you so wish). Now catching up with Merlin, Nevermind the Buzzcocks and Heroes has never been easier.

Not too sure of the current situation, but according to http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/technology/2008/04/wii.html , iplayer is difficult on the xbox because
  1. Microsoft want control over the layout. Presumably to integrate it into the current Xbox interface in mych the same way their own video marketplace is.
  2. The Xbox does not have a web browser (the PS3, Wii, iPhone and Nokia iplayers are essentially web based even if they appear not to be), so it would need to be a complete new application.

Sorry to hijack this a bit but the Xbox has web access and micrisoft own it and IE, surely it wouldn't be that hard to have a web browser.

Re: BBC Iplayer Fully Supported On PS3

I doubt that this will be available on the xbox. MS control it tightly and they tend to favour the US, so anything for just the UK would be low on their list of priorities. As already said, the xbox doesn't even have a web browser. I think opening it up slightly would stop the tight control they have on Live etc.

Installed the new PS3 update earlier and watched last weeks Survivors. You can kind of get pseudo full screen. You have to have the iplayer control bar at the bottom and some blackbands at the edge. It's also a tad fiddly as you have to zoom and move it using the right stick and then move the pointer out of the way carefully with the left stick. If you're not careful you nudge the picture off centre and have to start again. Quality is ok, no worse than watching Setanta football on NTL!

Re: BBC Iplayer Fully Supported On PS3

Great news

Ixalon's www.PS3iPlayer.com will be continuing though, for those who prefer its interface to that of the official iPlayer.

Oh, it would be relatively easy. Even if MS didn't own IE, there are various open source browsers and web kits that could be used (Nokia's web browser and Safari for instance, are both based upone the same open source code).

It's just MS want people to be using Windows and Windows Mobile to browse the web..
